Many Yorkshire people take pride in the fact that the Airedale Terrier originated in their county and, by travelling back in time, we can discover how the Airedale saw the light of day as one of the native canine breeds of Great Britain. As the Industrial Revolution progressed during the 1800s, the area around Leeds and Bradford was full of mills emitting smoke from their tall chimneys, coal mines with their shaft wheels turning, and factories sounding the day's ending with their sirens. The workers, in what little leisure time they had, centred their interests on the River Aire, because part of its course runs through those towns. The animals found in the Aire valley provided endless hours of sport, so terriers were bred to work and hunt otters, water rats, polecats, martens, weasels, rabbits, hares, badgers, ducks and moorhens. These pursuits could also prove profitable for the sporting workers, because side bets took place at the so-called 'Water Rat' matches!
. The need for the perfect dog was paramount. Owning such a champion would mean a good income for any working man. The men would work with teams of terriers and would bet a 'bob or two'. Of course, the best dog of the bunch could bring in a few shillings, or even guineas, if his owner wanted to sell the animal. The dogs were also used for late-night or early-morning hunting and poaching, bringing back much-needed food for the family cooking-pot.
