Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
He makes it sound so easy. Just select the shares that perform. Now in its third edition, Richard Koch's Selecting Shares That Perform has earned its right to a place on every investor's bookshelf. Koch sets out rules that anyone, from novice investor to seasoned expert can use to his or her benefit. The breezy, can-do attitude is helpful--to say nothing of the information, presented a little bit at time, so as to not overwhelm. By the end, every reader will have gained invaluable insights and useful knacks for understanding how the best City investors profit.

One of Koch's first insights is that different investment techniques are appropriate for different kinds of people, but the basic concept revolves around how much effort the reader/investor is willing to take on. The meat of the book is in the 10 different means of selecting the next big winners, including such advice as: follow the rainmakers and buy the shares that those with an investing track record have bought; select a handful of truly excellent shares and then sit back and let your profits ride; invest in things you know about; find companies with growing earnings; dig deep into company reports and understand the investment.

Koch concludes by stating that "none of the ways recommended is a licence for the lazy to get rich quick. All of the ways are encouragement to the industrious and creative elements in our society to apply the same mixture of effort and inspiration to the compounding of wealth as to its original creation." Amen to that. --Bruce McWilliams

MUST-HAVE FOR THE SERIOUS INVESTOR4
I'm quite surprised that I am the first person reviewing this book for Amazon. There are maybe 5 books that every serious UK investor will have read. This is one of them. Koch provides an overview of all the major approaches to successful share investment in the UK. The book is logically set out (exploring each major investment approach in turn), clearly written and of practical use. It was the first book I ever read about UK investment, and I still rate it one of the best. Too many UK investment books are written by amateurs (journalists, semi-successful professionals etc). This isn't one of them. The book blurb confirms that Koch has had real investment experience). Finally, I'm not related to Koch or being paid by him. I just appreciate good investment writing. It's rare, contrary to all the marketing hype that the financial publishers put out.

There is no one correct investment approach3
The book focuses on an investment approach compatable with your personality that if followed should beat the market. Depending on whether you are a visionary, analyst or doer you are then guided into which of the ten investment approaches would be best suited to you. For me the best insight was gained as Koch suggests by placing all the shares you have ever owned into three catagories; winners, losers and average, all relative to the market. Then looking for common themes about them such as type of company, knowledge of the business, why you bought them etc. and repeating this exercise for each category. The other important point he demonstrates is the necessity to keep a working sheet of your portfolio and update it regularly, along with the index you are trying to beat, this constant monitoring of your performance will ensure that your chosen investment method is working/not working. If the latter then after a suitable time period, say eighteen months or so then no problem there's always a tracker fund! The book contains information that was relevent to the market to 1993-94, in this edition the author has resisted the temptation to go back and massage the figures instead he places updates where necessary. This helps demonstrate just how fickle the market can be and as always anyone following the investment approaches shown will see that shares can and will go down as well as up, something we should all keep remembering!
