Average customer review:Product Description
There is currently an enormous wealth of materials and of print and manufacturing processes available to designers. These opportunities are rarely fully explored, whether from lack of knowledge, or from a belief that they will be too costly, too complicated, or too time-consuming. Materials, Process, Print explores these diverse possibilities, providing insights into how they can be stretched, skewed and subverted to produce original results. In-depth analysis of specific materials and of key print and manufacturing processes is combined with a series of case studies showcasing innovative practice from major international studios at the cutting edge of contemporary design. Functioning as a handbook for reference and a highly illustrated source of ideas and creative solutions, this book suggests fresh approaches and new ways of thinking for designers working in graphic design and packaging, and will also be of interest to product designers and anyone who commissions design in these fields.

Materials,process, print
A good showcase of contemporary, high-end solutions to print and packaging. Specifically focused around corporate identity, Mason offers an insight into the choices made by some celebrated designers and studios.
The book is insightful in the explanation of the relationship between client, designer, printer and supplier.
Where the book falls short though, is in its brief and hurried detailing of the materials and processes that achieve such marvellous results. There are sections of the book that deal with these areas, but give no real information for example in terms of standard costing for a process.
Perhaps this expectation is too pedantic, and the vague 'relatively cheap to quite expensive' scale should suffice.
The book itself, on the whole, is a well presented and designed exhibition of what can be achieved with print, process and material, just not a detailed workbook for how.
A beautiful book...
This is a well produced book that shows some great examples of different finishes, print and production processes. The only downside is that the cover marks quite easily. Shame. Otherwise I found it very useful and I often refer to it for inspiration, or when I am trying to persuade a client that it is worth investing in a special process or finish!
