Karcher steam cleaners
I have been a happy user of Karcher steam cleaners for over 7 years now, and can hopefully help a couple of the reviewers with points they have raised:

- The 'spinning cap' issue. The safety valve is designed so that it will not release until the pressure in the tank has dispersed. It is not a fault, there is no point getting your bodybuilder friends to try to force it. It is a deliberate design feature. I admit that it is very frustrating to have to wait for the tank to cool before you can top it up when you are half way through a job, but surely that's better than getting scalded by steam?
- Limescale. Try putting some vinegar or lemon juice on the limescale and letting it sit for a while before you attack it with steam. I successfully removed large amounts of built-up limescale from around the taps when I moved into a new house.
- Of course you still have to wipe - or in the case of built up, burned on or very old stains - go over them a few times. The steam will loosen/dislodge/melt dirt, but will not make it 'vapourise', if you'll pardon the pun. Steam makes cleaning easier, it does not make it completely effortless. I do think, though, that it gives a better result than chemical cleaning, and without harming the environment or leaving harsh smells behind.
- As for the reviewer who complained that the steam is very hot, well d'oh!

I bought my Karcher S1122 roughly a week ago (and fully intend to review again after a fuller period of time) having put much time into online research and with thanks to the previous reviewers here. Most people seemed to agree that steam cleaners are great, but I found it somewhat arbitrary in deciding which cleaner to go for.

Firstly, dealing with Mr Kershaw's pique about the cap. I assume he had the same problem my partner had early on; in that the filller cap just goes round and round without gripping the thread. My analysis at the time was fairly blunt; either it's cr*p and has broken or it's a safety feature based on the pressure of the tank whilst hot. Thankfully it was the latter - and we didn't have to draft in a multitude of body builder friends to work this one out. Either way, one sends it back as faulty or it's actually quite a good safety feature - no need to get too worked up about it.

Next. I've now spent nearly four days deep cleaning our home for the first time since we moved in - nearly 7 years ago. I have no doubt that the steam cleaner has made this quicker, easier, less back breaking and more satisfying by far.

It's equally horrifying and reassuring to see how much crud one can prise from the dark, damp corners....

I did take the advice of a previous reviewer, and we hired a carpet cleaner for deep clean of the carpets and I'm happy that I can now maintain the carpets-ish, but that in my usual weekly clean, I'm acheiving much more in a shorter space of time.

The kitchen and bathroom in particular are the areas which have benefitted - and the speed with which I can whizz round the surfaces and tiles is great. One can also see the effects of the cleaning process in the cloths which are attached (optionally) to the attachments to pick up dirt as you go along. I've been into the skirting boards, grouting, and even just the tiled walls of the bathroom in more depth that usual elbow grease allows. I've chased the accumulated dirt and dust from the window sills and panes - the detail of which just cannot be achieved with cloths and effort alone.

There's perhaps an acknowledgment about standards and time which must be made as well. For people who work full time and need to fit a maintenance cleaning schedule into weekend hours, the Karcher steamer is a godsend. I got more done, in less time and felt that it was CLEAN (rather than just having gone through the motions with a cloth)than ever.

If, however, you're more old-school, and already clean every inch of your home to Operating Theatre standards, then perhaps there's less obvious a benefit - though I would point out that the bacteria killing properties of temperature are favourably compared with those of chemical based products (pedantic micro-biologists need not respond on this point).

What's difficult to find online is a comparison of steam cleaner models for domestic use. I made my decision on budget (give or take £50) then by user review then by manufacturer claim. I'm still not sure whether the 'lower' Karcher models might have done me just as well, but key features for me have been the cloths that fit over the attachments, the portability and the useful attachments. So I would encourage other purchasers to compare on similar points.

My personal conclusion is that this is a machine which will enable me, a reluctant housekeeper, to maintain far better standards of cleanliness all around my home than I ever managed begrudgingly with cloths and sprays. I was geared up to pay someone to come and do a deep clean of my house (pending the arrival of my first baby) and the S1122 (can't speak for the other models) has been about the same amount of money, and yet it's now an asset for the house. Partner loves it too and is thoroughly convinced that the purchase has been very worthwhile.

My mother and mother in law also approve, so let joy be unconfined!

Great for Windows
I really find this good for cleaning the windows. It takes a fraction of the time. The patio door gets lots of fingerprints/mud from the children and this needs additional scrubbing, but for general dust dirt it takes literally 1 minute per window. It is also wonderful for cleaning tiles in the kitchen and bathroom. It is a fantastic labour saving tool.
