Review
I wish I'd had 'GCSE Drama for Edexcel' last year. It's great. It explains the course requirements in Year 10 speak. It lays out exactly what a student needs to do, with examples. It doesn't pretend to be a "how to teach GCSE Drama...", but acknowledges the subject's spontaneity and puts itself forward as a support to teacher and student. (Times Educational Supplement )

A superb guide to the exam for students and teachers!
When a new exam syllabus is brought out there is always some nervousness about how best to tackle the work. With the new Edexcel Drama GCSE one have no fears with a book such as this. Ken and Jos cover all aspects of the course from the student and teacher perspectives and it is laid out in a logical and progressive manner...starting with an overview and then focussing on areas of the exam and the coursework in more detail.Ideas are given for short tasks and longer projects, the stages of work are clearly explained and tips and hints are given along the way. There are substantial resources given which could be used with students very successfully and these range from small information tables to extracts from plays.
I think that every opportunity to insert relevant information, hints, student tasks and activities has been taken and this book provides a superb resource for teachers who are involved in teaching the Edexcel (or many other exam boards) Drama syllabus.
We now have two copies in the department... one would have been hogged for too long to be useful to the other department member!

A Disappointing Effort
I ordered copies of this book to teach to a mixed-ability class under the impression that it would help them to lean more about the subject and to expand their skills. I have persevered with it over a couple of years but feel now that it is just not worth the effort. The stimulus material is of poor quality, is presented in a boring style and does little to encourage students to use their skills or to learn more about theatre itself. The poor presentation and text-heavy layout is unsuiatable for students with Special Needs. The book does not give any help to students who need to produce two large and extensive portfolios.
I feel that the Edexcel course is very good, but this book is very poor and would not advise any teacher to use it. There are better texts available.
