Customer Reviews
at last one of the most under-rated albums gets a release!
marilyn was always meant to be a star!
back in the early 80's he fame fame as part of the boy george, steve strange new romantics london set!
his beauty apart...marilyn was a great vocalist and even better songwriter!
i adored his image but a lot did not...unlike boy george he didn't prefer a cup of tea to sex and his image did not endear him to the mothers, the girls, or the boys! apart from young teens discovering there sexuality in the 80's..a taboo at the time!
"calling your name" went top 5 but it was seen as an novelty record...no one looked deeper into the talent!
miss diana ross was captivated by him..but marilyn froze...and ruined his career!
the drugs fiasco didn't help...but one listen to this album will put any ideas you had out of your mind..for fans its a welcome release that we have been waiting for!
so to the album
"calling your name" opens the album...great track that was a huge hit...claudia fontaine provides great backing vocals...an ultimate 80's anthem 10/10
"mountain to the ocean" harks back to the 60's motown sound..once heard never forgotten! 10/10
"surrender your love" is a beautiful long song..great lyrics..a classic! 10/10
"third eye" was a b-side but its a great song with great lyrics..a bit gospel,,a bit chant 10/10
"baby u left me in the cold" was the 4th single..marilyn had cut off his hair (to look more accessable maybe) but despite it being a great track with don was it stalled at no.71 in the charts...10/10
"you don't love me" was the 3rd single..and just reached the top 40...all but the faithful were now over maz...a great track with a reggae/big band feel 10/10
"give it up" has a carousel backing...great lyrics maybe a bit to camp 9/10
"wear it out" may be a short track but it packs a huge punch! an epic of the pop world 10/10
"cry and be free" is such a great track i am having it played at my funeral....it meant so much then and it is still one of my favourite songs. this was the 2nd single which stalled at no.31
the extra tracks include 12" versions of the singles and some rare b-sides!
"move together" was the b-side of "calling your name" and i played it more than the single..a stunning track!100/10
"raining again" was the b-side of "you dont love me" and again.it played it to death 100/10
"cry and be free" gets 2 extended version..striesand stlyle is ok 9/10 but the gospel version is one of my favourite tracks of all time..tis the funeral song 1000000/10..you can come if you like!
"running" was the b-side of cry and be free 7" and its the weakest song!
marilyn is still alive..writing and recording...i doubt we will see another commercial release..but such a talent needs to be heard!
the only point to raise is "pray for that sunshine" has been removed at marilyn request!
Finally!!!
Finally....This has to be one of the finest pop albums of the 80's. Marilyn released some of the finest pop songs between 1983 - 1985. Unfortunately, by the time his debut album was unleashed in 1985 he was out of favour with the media and this wonderful "greatest hits" album was cruelly ignored by the masses. After spending years listening to the LP & casette versions , us legions of "maz" fans finally get a proper CD release. If you appreciated finely crafted pop music with heartfelt lyrics, sung with a soulful voice, this will be a treat!
flawed cd version of great l.p
As i say in my vinyl review of this l.p,this is full of great catchy soulful pop song's and excellent ballad's.The problem with this cd version is that Marilyn withdrew the inclusion of "Pray for that sunshine" which was on the original record and was his 5th U.K single. There is also no "I ain't been licked" b-side nor any of the following hard to get track's that i and so many fan's would have liked included "Spirit in the sky","Hold on tight",and "Sooner or later","Sophia","Vital part of you","You don't know",and "Ooh child".There are 3 great b-side's included "Running","Move together",and "Raining again" off the 1st 3 U.K single's which is great but there are irritatingly several 12" remixe's of track's already included on here that could of been replaced with the hard to get track's and would have gotten this cd and 5 star review. This cd is still a very worthy buy if u don't have the vinyl version anyways as it is very enjoyable.Shame there was no 2nd l.p!.
