Teaches excellent habits
This book is thorough with many technical exercises to work at. The DVD is a bonus since you can both SEE and HEAR how the sounds are produced. When it comes to the more difficult slap tones, it is SO useful to be able to see how a real conga player like Cruz produces it. Also, having a DVD gives you an idea of what pitch to actually tune your congas to. This is often overlooked or glossed over leaving a complete beginner absolutely lost as to what pitch to choose.

I would have liked the book to have gone further than it does, but then Thomas Cruz has a book 2 and 3 which is unfortunately not available on this site.

Although the book is excellent and teaches well, I would suggest another book as a 'rest' from the exercises presented hear. It's nice to see what other players do and gives you a lift after a lot of sever practise!!
