A very late review!
All of you out there who are fans of old school gaming and 2d platformers must have owned or played this game.
I remember when I first played this in 1999 which even then was a bit too late I only managed to ever kill Richter at the end and that was it I assumed that was the game completed so I very foolishly sold it for about £20 afterwards.
I have just paid a very pricy £70 to get it back after five and a half years only to discover that is not the case and that I only completed half of it (What a mug) anyway with its haunting orchestral music and still reasonably nice graphics I played again and this time got to the reverse castle which means this game has made me realise its length complexity and the fact its a jolly fantastic slice of old school pie.
Now I know this game is rare and makes loads of money from auctions but if you like 2d games like sonic, streetfighter, mario anything then please take your time to buy and play this game.
I am never going to sell my copy ever and think this is certainly without doubt the best in the castlevania series.
The gameboy advance incarnations and good though and the Dawn of sorrow looks fantastic as well so alls well for 2d platfomrers yet!!
The greatest 2-d platformer ever created!
Hark back to the days Castlevania was knocking about on the NES, SNES and Megadrive - they were quality games. Now think what the programmers can create with a CD's capacity and the Playstations power. All I can say is - WOW!
If you remember Richter Belmont the game starts off with him and his whip, he destroys the Count Dracula and then the game starts. Dracula's castle re-appears and this time a vampire named Alucard (what is it about vampires spelling their names backwards?) takes up the challenge to rid the world of the evil Count.
There is the original castle to work through and this is big, bigger than any previous game, and there are plenty of secrets to find.
The graphics are good with some great hidden effects like the waterfall. Good bosses. Huge array of swords, magic & transformations for the main character (Alucard) to choose from. He can transfigure into a bat/wolf/mist/poison gas cloud, all of which have special attacks.
There must be about 40/50 weapons. You can kit out the main character with armour, shields, talismans, gaunlets - you name it.
The music fits very well.
But the main strength of this game is it's playability.
It's very, very hard to stop playing it, I've had this game on & off for about 3 years and I keep coming back to it. I believe it beats all the olds, if you liked games like Super Metroid, Mario - All Stars/ World, or even Sonic in the old classic arcade style of play you will love this.
Just one word sums it up - class.
The best 2d game ever created.
Castlevania symphony of the night is the most perfect 2d game made. Unlike other Castlevania games, your character is the ever so cool son of dracula, Alucard. The whole thing is set in one massive castle and there are no levels - just like Metroid, Mario or Zelda - a classic way of presenting an adventure game. This also means you have to find certain items before you can find your way to a new section of the castle. On top of that, the whole thing is also presented like a role playing game, with many different items to equip (armor, boots, sheild, weapon, cloak, rings, pendants, headgear), and your usual roleplay stats that go up as you level up and as you get better items.
So far so good? but theres more! Alucard can also cast spells in real time using streetfighter style commands!!(I think there are about 6 different spells to discover) Some items, weapons and combinations of the two also have secret commands built into them.
If that wasn't enough stuff to think about, you also have the 'relics' that you find on your journey - each one can be switched on and off and has a unique effect on the game. Through these relics you can turn into a bat, a wolf and a cloud of mist - all with their own unique functions within the game. Using the relics you can also have a selection of Familliars that you can get to follow you around and help you out (I think there are 4 to find). And on top of that you have all the classic Castlevania secondary weapons, other relics and many special items with unique effects including one use magic items.
All of these brilliant elements come together with many areas to explore, amazing bosses, untold amounts of treasure, secrets and an incredible musical score. An absolute masterpiece.
