Product Description

Dubai and the rest of the United Arab Emirates is an extraordinary mixture of ancient Arabic culture and modern Western capitalism. The most opulent hotels in the world fight for attention with open tracts of desert that stretch, uninhabited, to the horizon. Hundreds of kilometers of sandy beaches, which run into the warm and clear waters of the Arabian Gulf, are only interrupted by desalination plants that create enough fresh water to keep acres of Dubai public gardens in luscious bloom. No expense has been spared to make Dubai a five-star paradise for up-market tourists looking for great food and drink, extraordinary duty free shopping, and all-year round sunshine. Discover sunken wrecks that attract divers from around the world; nightclubs hosting Europe and Asia's hottest DJs; desert driving in death defying conditions; restaurants run by globally renowned chefs; and shopping trips that mix bazaars full of ancient Iranian spices with tax free-priced suits from Armani and Versace.

Customer Reviews

A recommended pair that will keep you up to date.4
First, a word of warning. In my opinion, there is no such thing as an up to date guidebook to Dubai. This city is expanding with such speed that, by the time a guidebook is written and published, it will be out of date. Newer hotels, bigger buildings, better restaurants and more fashionable bars and clubs are opening all the time and if you expect your guidebook to have kept up with the non-stop development then you're going to be disappointed.

So why Time Out Dubai? Well, basically, because of its sister publication the "Time Out Dubai Magazine" which is published in the Emirate every month and is available free in most hotels or for a few dirhams from newsstands. I've found the guidebook to be great for pre-travel planning with excellent sections [in the usual Time Out 'listings' style] on what makes Dubai tick:- hotels, bars and cafes, restaurants, clubs and shops. It has allowed me to sketch out my plans and decide where to stay, where to eat for that special meal and where to shop, as well as providing some cultural and historical information on the city and its environs, including Abu Dhabi and the rest of the UAE. On arrival I get hold of a copy of the Time Out Dubai magazine for bang up to date listings for club nights, concerts, DJ events and special promotion nights all in the same format - providing me with a `seamless service' as it were.

The same Time Out Dubai guidebook has served me for three visits to the UAE and although some of the listings are now out of date, by pairing the book with the magazine, I can ensure I have access to the most current information on each visit. Recommended.
