Synopsis
Hip Hop has dominated popular culture for the last decade, bringing a new flavour to all aspects of life, from fashion to advertising and television to language, and, of course, music. With "How to Draw Hip-Hop", this new style of drawing is brought to life by co-authors Damion Scott, a noted comic book and hip-hop artist, and Kris Ex, an internationally recognized music journalist and the biographer for rap star 50 Cent. The book includes drawing basics and construction of the hop-hop look; ways to capture the mannerisms and spirit of the young urban generation; how to draw hip-hop gear, environments, hip-hop characters (MC, DJ), break dancing, and graffiti.

Super Guide to this art form
I'm a working cartoonist and I needed something on this genre to help me with a strip I was drawing. The book was more than valuable for the job I was doing and it now takes pride of place in my reference library. I have used it numerous occasions since as I have grown to like the style of drawing. The style has some Manga influences in the style of drawing while still conveying the Hip Hop culture. Characters have large eyes, for example. However, the drawing instruction is sound and based on development from form to build up the figure. The guide is done in a cartoon narrated style throughout the book, which adds to its charm. Where the drawing instruction is very good, my only criticism is that the colour up instruction is lacking. For me that was not a problem but it could be a beginner when they have mastered the basic drawing skills. I would therefore recommend that a beginner get another source of reference to learn how to colour up with markers, as an example.
