Born in Dundee in 1938, Maureen Reynolds grew up in wartime Scotland, a young girl surrounded by adult concerns. There was the endless queuing for rations that never seemed to stretch quite far enough, the blackouts and the air raids. But, if times were hard, they were also simpler and, in Voices in the Street, Maureen remembers with great fondness her early years with her wise old grandad, the enjoyment of riding on tram cars, the weekly wash-house gossip and the people and places of her childhood. When she left school at fifteen, Maureen immediately started her working life with a job at the local sweetie factory. Coming of age in the era of Teddy Boys and rock 'n' roll, she enjoyed dancing with her best friend Betty. Then, as Maureen grew up, she found her love, only to see him borrowed in the name of National Service. But, through good times and bad, she would never forget growing up in Dundee. Voices in the Street is an intimate and moving account of a life, reflecting the memories, hopes and fears of a generation.

Customer Reviews
Sheer nostalgia
Voices in the Street by Maureen Reynolds took me back to my own childhood and early years in Dundee.
Well written, the book painted a vivid description of Dundee dwelling in the 1940s and 1950 and mention of the Blackness trams and street references to the area around the Hilltown took me back 50 years and evoked memories and much nostalgia.
Dundee memories
I got my dad this book for his xmas and he loved it. While reading it he discovered that he had the same school teacher as the author, and that she once lived in the same street as my dad's auntie. It's a sma toon!
(I haven't read this book (yet), but I will do when I next visit bonnie Dundee ;)
Old Memories
I had a more privileged childhood from Maureen but the memeories she invokes through the expressions and descriptions of familiar places are so real. The book has been passed around my friends, both Dundonians and from further afield, and it has been enjoyed by all. A thoroughly good read.
