Disappointing but interesting re-write3
This game is basically an update of the classic Dune II, which was the great-grandaddy of the entire RTS genre.

If you have Dune II, don't bother with this one - it's too similar. Spend your money on a more modern RTS game instead. Even if you don't have Dune II, I'd recommend a more properly modern game - unless you really, really want an RTS game set on Dune, in which case get Dune2000 if you want the latest updated graphics etc. or Dune II if you want a piece of gaming history.

The portrayal of the Dune world is good, with 3 distinct houses to play (the Noble Atreides, the Evil Harkonen, and the Insidious Ordos - the latter being a creation of Westwood Studios rather than Frank Herbert, nevertheless they definitely add to the game). Each house has its own strenghts and weaknesses, and the addition of a different (and appropriate) computer voice for each house adds to the atmosphere.

The game is challenging for a beginner, but easy for a hardened RTS player. There's not much emphasis on combined arms - you can do everything just by building big tanks. Having said that, battles can still be full of tension and excitement as you try to force your way past the enemy defenses and to their vulnerable production facilities, or attempt to stave off wave after wave of enemy attackers...

To conclude: dated, still fun, but mainly of historical interest as an update to a classic, seminal game.

Amazing and outstanding of its time5
Just imagine the time it was released when the RTS genre was not flooded with the C& C clones.

the whole game was a masterpeace and true successor of the original but the thing that is so unbeatable is its intro and the background music which is still unbeatable.

Dune Forever5
Never disappointing, better than Dune2. Game play simple, does not take you hours to learn it and that's the fun, you get right into this game and become part of the house you are fighting for. If you want to build and destroy, then this is still one of the best games about. so go buy it!
