Essential
This is a great little gadget although a pricey one.
If you are going on holidays and need several mobile phone chargers and an ipod charger you will be better off with this solar charger and some connections.
I had mine for over a year and I have taken it with me to several trips in Central America and it worked just fine.
I also bought a rubber case made by the same company to protect it.
sadly is not compatible with many digital cameras and I hope they can sort that out for the next model.
Great little gadget
I've had the Solio Classic since 2007 and have found it to be possibly the best of the mini solar chargers. It sits on my SW facing living room window sill and so gets sun throughout the afternoon. In this position, it usually takes up to 4 afternoons to charge fully on sunny days, but this can be as short as 2 afternoons in the summer months when the sun is strong.
The best features of the Solio (when compared to other devices) are mainly the design features. The hole through the hinge around which the 3 solar panels rotate is, I've found, essential. This allows you to poke a stick, a pen or similar through so you can align the Solio at the perfect angle to catch the sun's rays. Other devices lack this.
Another excellent feature is the battery status light - by pressing the little button, the LED light flashes once for each 25% of battery charge, so a full battery gives 4 flashes. I find this really handy as it lets you know how many devices you can charge at that instant (usually 2 on a full battery). Again, cheaper solar charges tend to lack this feature.
It's reasonably small and I've had no problems travelling abroad and using it to charge by iPod, my Sony Ericsson K550 phone and my gf's Nokio phone. It comes with several of the most common phone tips, but then again, they all do, so you'd expect that for the price.
The downside is that I've found that I only really using between the equinoxes - between March and October. I travel between the UK and Holland every month and find that the winter sun is just too weak to get much of a charge between November and February. Still, compared with my other charger (a Silverpoint Solar Trio), I would rate the Solio as heaps better. Sure the Silverpoint also acts as a torch, but it's a chunk bigger than the Solio, and if you need light, you can simply connect a USB light to Solio's USB cable and, hey presto, you've got a Solio torch.
All in all, I love my Solio and would recommend it to anyone who needs power on the go, whether you're out camping or just away from home. All it needs is sun.
Solio Charger
Very good product. Comes with lots of attachments. Instructions could be a bit clearer but overall works very well. Very pleased.
