Just what I've been waiting for....
Having had the 20gb sony walkman as a gift and being totally happy with its performance and looks I should have stopped looking for a new player 12 months ago.... only trouble with it was the weight when wearing it on an armband in the gym (sad but true). I have been sorely tempted to buy a nano for its looks, but put off by the software. Saw this little beauty in the airport and was smitten and lighter of pocket within seconds.. it looks cute, weighs nothing at all and (having already got sonic on my laptop) was plugged in (via usb) loaded with atrac songs and ready to go in the 10 mins I had to wait in the departure lounge. (have been using it for four days on & off and its still going strong on that initial charge)
Havent had chance to load a playlist yet, but am sure this will negate the frustration of not being able to view a list of songs to choose from. Getting used to the menu options (whilst on further planes, trains and automobiles)
Good points: looks, usb plug, no batteries to change (or run down mid jog), excellent recharge time and lithium battery life, weight, nice earphones, 2gb storage, great software, great brand name...
Bad points: No song lists to scroll through (but I've been spoilt with the big brother version), no accessories - ipod still have better toys to add on....thats it.
A Love/Hate Relationship.
I love the screen - i love the fact that you can't see it until it is on! But I hate that in the sunlightlight you can't read the screen at all.
I love that it has a USB key built into it so that all the file transfer and charging is done without cables. But I hate that the cap just solts over the top of it and that i will blatently lose it within a month or so.
I love that it plays Atrac3 which are half the size of Mp3 and no quality difference through headphones (although it is just about noticable through good speakers). But, and this is a big BUT, I hate sonicstage! I got my new player home and, oddly enough, the first thing I wanted to do was put all my music on it. So I installed Sonicstage (no problem yet) and imported all my music from my hard disk. This is where I hit my first problem; sonicstage doesn't support 2nd version ID tags on Mp3s, meaning that I had to edit all my music files in Winamp. So now I set up Sonicstage to convert all my music to Atrac3plus 64kbps as it is transferred to my new player and 3 hours later all my music is on my player. However, roughly 1 in 10 tracks is now CORRUPTED! In the end I had to rip all of my CDs into Atrac3 using sonicstage!! And to make things worse Sonicstage refused to recognise 2 of my albums as audio CDs (they were fine in media player). So I had trawl through all the songs that weren't ripped by Sonicstage and making a note of all the tracks that were corrupted. I then had to delete the backup copy of the corrupted Atrac3 that Sonicstage automatically creates on your harddisk and uses every time you transfer into that format and finally re-encode and retransfer.
If anyone knows of any solution to the problem (a software patch or conflicting software perhaps)I would be extremely greatful, but before anyone asks my computer specs are more than good enough to encode audio files:
AMD Athlon 3200+
1024 RAM
WinXP Pro
All the small problems (dim screen and losing the cap) I could live with, but now that my music is finally on the player I'm not moving it about at all for fear of it corrupting!
SUMMARY: BEAUTIFUL PLAYER, HIDDEOUS SOFTWARE!
This is fantastic!
Okay, I'm new to mp3's, but I had being going to get the 6mb Hard drive for my birthday, then saw this nifty little number coming out, and thought it would be less cumbersome. I pre-ordered at my local Sony store, and it came in last week. It is fantastic! It is the size and weight of a lighter, looks funky as anything and the sound quality is great. Loads of people on other sites have complained about the Sony software but I haven't had any problems whatsoever and it seems perfectly straightforward to me. Also, as it's all plastic won't have the problem with peeling silver paint that has been mentioned about other Sony mp3's. Note that there isn't clear plastic on the reverse of the mp3, but the colour matches the front. Anyway, my brother and my boyfriend both want one of these now, because they look so good! They make the Apple's look boring! Now I just need to wait for all the accessories to come out...
