Not really necessary...
I bought this book after seeing the BBC Railway Walks series presented by Julia Bradbury, to enable me to do the Cornwall coast to coast walk.
Having now done the walk, I feel that this book is not at all necessary. The path is well marked by granite blocks in both directions and even taking my trusty OS map with me was a bit of an overkill. If you look closely at the Julia Bradbury film, in many of the shots, in the background, you will see granite blocks about three feet high acting as signposts. These are very hard to miss when you're out walking :-)
If you are considering the doing the Cornwall Coast to Coast walk, here are a few tips that the book should have given to you...
First of all, take the train to, or park at Peranwell Station. Directly across the road from the station, you can take a direct bus to Portreath (takes about an hour with a ten minute stop in Redruth - but you remain on the bus).
At Portreath, there is a great café on the front by the big car park with good Italian coffee and excellent bacon sandwiches (really well filled with good thick cut bacon). You can then spend the rest of the day walking back to Devoran (maybe cutting the last mile or so off to cut back to the car). The walking is easy, however there is a lot of land management work going on (correct as of April 2009), which make this section, before Brunel's bridge a bit unpleasant.
On the day's walking, I can honestly say that I didn't use the book once, and I could so easily have planned the walk totally from the free PDF download from the Cornwall Tourist Board.
If you are intending to do other walks, then this might be of use, but I wouldn't buy it for the coast to coast walk...
