From the Author
For Office 2000 users
Whatever your level of computer knowledge, this book will help you with the course. An easy-to-follow structure makes it suitable for beginners. It is designed for self-study or classroom use and can also be used to complement other learning approaches.
Advantages over other ECDL learning materials:

bestselling text with tried and tested methodology, and learning goals explained in each section
exercises that follow the theory at each step, not just samples showing `how to do' but actually enabling `doing'
consolidation practice exercises at the end of each section, together with sample practice tests for each module (with sample answers)
lots of clear, labelled screenshots showing what you should see on your computer screen
CD-ROM provided with source exercises to save keying in
quick reference guides for each application listing the different ways of performing tasks
lots of hints, tips and advice - includes just what you need to know
a section on the BCS Using IT (required when seeking UK funding in some cases)
access to web-based resources, including a forum moderated by the author
I hope you enjoy using this book and CD.

haphazard2
I have used this book for a number of years as an IT tutor. As a resource based learning centre I have found that the book fails a number of students. The book requires a lot of support due to the numerous errors and anomalies in the text

Instructions such as: insert a picture, make it 4cms wide by 4cms high while keeping the same aspect ratio. As most pictures are rectangular in shape this is a nonsense instruction.

Some learners do manage to work independently and succeed in their ECDL modules, but as a tutor I find that so much energy goes into interpreting and rewriting the book.

My biggest problem with the book apart from the anomalies in the text is the lack of proper contextualised explanation. I get the impression that the book was put together in a very hurried and haphazard way and definately not proof read.

Learning to Pass ECDL 4.0 for Office 20004
I started a course in ECDL & from the outset it was obvious that the tutor was going to let us go it alone. This book takes you methodically through each module (allbeit with errors that could confuse at times)but for the most part the book gives a good grounding for anything that you are likely to come across in the module papers. I was "scanning" in the database module, & had to go back to find out where I had failed to enter data so that I could complete the module. If you do every exercise in the book you should pass this course without too much trouble. Good Luck
