Product Description

According to DistroWatch (http://www.distrowatch.org), the industry standard for determining Linux distribution penetration and popularity, Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntulinux.org) is presently the #1 most popular distribution out of the 100 monitored variations, beating out heavyweights such as Fedora and SUSE. Indeed, a huge user base has assembled around this community-driven distribution since its inception, and efforts will surely be bolstered as a result of the recent formation of the Ubuntu Foundation, backed with an initial funding round of $10 million and the considerable resources of project founder and tech magnate Mark Shuttleworth.
Beginning Ubuntu Linux: From Novice to Professional, Second Edition is the update to the best-selling first book introducing Ubuntu Linux. Adapted from Keir Thomas' best-selling Beginning SUSE Linux: From Novice to Professional (Apress, 2005), Thomas guides readers through the most commonly desired yet confusing concepts and tasks confronted by new Linux users. Purposely focused on end users to satisfy the growing interest in migrating away from Windows to the increasingly mature Linux desktop platform, this book serves as a guide to a rapid and transparent familiarization of those features most treasured by general and power desktop users alike.

Customer Reviews

the BOOK to learn and use Ubuntu5
I bought this book and I can tell that this is THE book I was waiting for.
It's well written and helpful, without being boring or too simple.
Like the title says, it starts from the first steps in the Linux' world to help you being productive from the beginning and then leads you to more complex paths gradually.
It explains the meaning of open source without lecturing and without pretending that Linux is the only OS worth knowing.
It's good.

Perfection...5
Some of you may know, its difficult to tell which linux distro is the one for you.. Its all trial and error. All I have to say is, like millions of others, this Linux operating system is the one to go for..

The book goes through everything you need to know about the OS without over using technical dribble. Its set out in a way that even people whom have never used another OS before will simply enjoy getting into the swing of things with Ubuntu.

True to its word, the Ubuntu community is one of a million - kinda reminds me of the still much alive Amiga community.. Those these are not users, the Ubuntu community are Ubuntu People!

I look forward to continuing my quest through the book, and of course jumping back and fourth as required.

A fabulous book by Keir Thomas, wonderfully worded and doesnt patronize the newbie!

Swapping over to Ubuntu Linux5
Despite several attempts in past years to get on the Linux Bus. I had failed.
The book follows a logical order, and gave me the information that I could not seem to understand from other Unix books and Linux magazine articles.
If you want to give Ubuntu a try, this book holds your hand all the way.
At last a foothold to make the jump. I have a machine up and running and will not be switching it off. I also have the knowledge to keep it running and understand enough to help myself.
The best computer book I have bought, clear, easy and useful as a reference.
