In this book of recipes Amanda Grant shows how vegan food can be modern, delicious and stylish, as well as extremely healthy. Vegan food does not contain any animal products; but the author's imaginative recipes demonstrate that you can maintain a perfectly balanced and nutritious diet using a wonderful variety of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and pulses. Vegan food also avoids all health risks associated with dairy produce (salmonella, listeria, E. coli and BSE). Recipes include Thai infused vegetables on lemon grass skewers, vegan sushi, warm blood oranges in cardamom syrup, and are influenced by Thai, Japanese and Moroccan cooking.

Amazon.co.uk Review
The vegan way, as Amanda Grant explains in the introduction to The New Vegan, excludes "all meat, fish, poultry, animal milk, honey and by-products derived from animals". Vegans eschew animal products of all kinds. (In fact, as she tells us later, debate rages in vegan circles over the use of honey, since collecting it doesn't actually harm the bees.) The resulting diet has had its unsavoury side--one thinks of the slightly creepy cans of vegetarian sausages that health-food shops used to stock--but in many ways now seems more and more sensible. Amanda Grant is definitely on the side of the angels as far as taste and ease of preparation are concerned. Nut loaves requiring five hours preparation and as much cooking are absent from The New Vegan: instead, Grant gives recipes built round a Mediterranean base of raw, grilled or roasted vegetables, pasta, couscous or rice; or a more Asian repertory drawing on curries, coconut and vegetable soups, satays and noodles. A very generous section dealing with Desserts incorporates many fruit recipes, but finds room for more traditional puddings, such as a version of Treacle Tart, before climaxing (if that's the word) with the Chocolate Raspberry Hazelnut Cake that Amanda Grant swears she would not have included unless it proved to be "gooey in the middle as all good chocolate cakes are". --Robin Davidson

An inspiring book for the modern vegan
Having been a vegetarian for around ten years I have condsidered becoming a vegan to boost my immune system and have a general feeling of well being. 'The new vegan'was my bible- I found the book very supportive in my decision to become a vegan.
In 'The New Vegan' Amanda Grant offers practical advice, tips and tantalising recipes to show that veganism is not boring but a modern way of achieving a balanced diet. Her easy to prepare recipes leave you spoilt for choice with recipes ranging from Asia to Europe. A vast array of unusual and nutritious meals are available to vegans. The great thing about the recipes is that they work and taste great!( I am particularly fond of the chocolate, raspberry and hazelnut cake- everyone should try it!)
Above all I really enjoyed Amanda Grant's warm, encouraging nature, her understanding of a modern, hectic lifestyle and appreciation of the reader's desire to achieve a balanced diet. A truly inspiring book. I love it.
Time for a relaunch, such a great book!
This is a sadly underrated book - her take on vegan food is fresh, accessible and the recipes really work. This book would be a great introduction to those non-vegans who bleat 'but what do you eat?' Grant was one of the first UK 'new-wave' vegan cookery writers and took vegan cuisine to a new level. She makes excellent use of fusion cooking, amongst other things and there are few obscure ingredients. My only minor criticism is that there are little or no tofu recipes, which is a shame because it's a wonderful food and very versatile. I think the publishers should relaunch it - with a special section on tofu!
