Synopsis
Whether castrating horses or dehorning cattle in the wilds of Wicklow, rescuing mangled cats from mongrels or tending to stoned Alsatians in Dublin's inner suburbs, vet Gillian Hick's sense of humour never deserts her in this engaging account of the sometimes hair-raising situations she encounters in the course of her work. Not only does she have to deal with animals and their ailments, but she also has to contend with the perils of macho farmers and their matchmaking mothers - not to mention the guys who want to know 'Where is the real vet?'

Delightful
Rich in warmth, love, gravitas and brilliant story-telling. This is a wonderful book detailing the ups and downs of the first year in vetinary practice of Gillian Hick. It shows the dedication and patience that is required to work with animals, but even more so, their owners - and indeed other vets(!)
Easy to read, very difficult to put down, the books travels from inner-city Dublin to the Irish country-side and back again. the characters - both human and animal - jump from the page and come alive in your imagination as if you are there watching over her shoulder.
A fantastic addition to the canon of real-life books and vetinary medicine books in particular.
Very, very much recommended!!
I don't want to put it down!
This books is a must for animal lovers and about as important for vet students as a copy of Black's Veterinary Dictionary! I'm half-way through now and really don't want to finish it!! Thanks Gillian!
Anybody who ejoys a good story should read this
Vet on the Loose is a candid, wry look at modern- day Veterinary practice. A hilarious insider's guide to all the funny things that can happen with animals and their owners. The most amusing and entertaining book since James Herriott's....
