Amazon.co.uk Review
Barely Legal is the 1997 debut from the Hives. They wear suits. They wear ties. Their members go under aliases like Chris Dangerous. They're from Sweden. They are five. Hives play bubblegum punk with a cocky swagger that lies somewhere between the sex-bomb tease of Ian Svenonius' Make-Up and pout of The New York Dolls: and having invented their formula for a rockin' good time five years ago now, see no reason to mess with it. Late-come Brit fans, only familiar with Hives' brand of hi-octane r'n'r through the Poptones compilation Your New Favourite Band, certainly won't be disappointed with Barely Legal. The full-on thrash of "A.K.A I-D-I-O-T" and "King Of Asskissing" may owe slightly more to the cartoon hardcore of Green Day and Blink 182 than 2002's trend towards late 70s New Wave, but it's a minor differential. Life's a riot with Hives.--Everett True
Customer Reviews
Fast and Furious - it's a top album
There is so much anger and energy in 'Barely Legal' and it's what I am looking for in any punk album. I do like some of the later Hives material but you could argue it's more watered down whereas this album may not be beyond say 'Tyranosaurus Hives' in the songwriting department but is much harder and faster if that's what you're looking for.
This is the best Hives CD I've come across yet hands down.
Excellent
I bought this album in Sweden just to see what they were like and i was very pleasently surprised. Fast hard punk rock / hardcore is what to expect and these guys do it very well. Stand out tracks are a.k.a. I.D.I.O.T and Here We Go Again but all of the album is great. There is so much energy in this album that if your a fan of bands like AFI or punk in general, you will really like this.
Their best?
Rawer than their later efforts, this is well worth buying. Musically reminiscent of Dead Kennedys and Ramones in places (well, to my ears anyway), it's fast and furious pretty much all the way. An album full of short, energetic songs. Well worth buying.
