Synopsis
It was the Ed Sullivan Show that introduced Elvis Presley to US TV audiences. The King was invited to the show three times, all of which is collected in this limited edition box set. During his first appearance on September 9, 1956, he left some 60 million people glued to their television sets with his soulful singing and wild hip gyrations. Live performances include 'Don't Be Cruel', 'Love Me Tender' and Hound Dog'.

Reely Big Shoe(s)!!
While the thought of sitting through an endless progression of ventriloquists, acrobats, so-called comedians and the most unnatural television personality of all time, Ed, isn't exactly appealing, it's definitely worth it once you see young Elvis in all his glory. Set in their original context, his performances are all the more forceful, all the more controversial and all the more remarkable, especially since they have been so meticulously re-mastered. What's more, some of the other acts are actually quite impressive: take the British ventriloquist on Elvis' third Ed Sullivan Show appearance, in January of 1957, before Presley dyed his hair black for the movies, and clad in his gold lamé sleeveless jacket and the blue velvet shirt, which he wore for his Tupelo homecoming appearance the previous September. Waiting in anticipation for Elvis to appear, we are reminded of the format of his 50's stage-shows, when the audience would have to sit patiently through jugglers, Irish tenors and similar talents which only made Elvis out to be even more alien. The bonus features are poor, but the liner notes by Greil Marcus more than make up for that. Elvis fans buy with confidence, if you haven't already done so.
re live the moment
I have seen several clips from the Ed Sullivan shows before but this boxed set surpasses anything seen before. What's most amazing is Elvis's performances compared the the other acts on the show. He is just so raw, sexy and exciting compared to the jugglers, performing dogs and general old vaudeville acts.
It is fasinating to compare his first appearance where he is shy, hesitant and nervous to the last show where he just takes the stage by storm and commands it.
The last show he is pictured from the waist up. All this does is to inflame his sex appeal. It certainly didn't do anything for 1950's morals!
So this is a superb boxed set. It shows a true entertainment genius in the making.
The Ed Sullivan Shows
Three complete shows unspoiled by voice-over narration. It is great to see the other 'variety' acts and how innocent the fifties were. Elvis is light years in front with his cool Rock 'n' Roll. You have probably seen these performances in 'bit-form' with some narrator doing the spoiling, none of that here. Elvis sings Reddy Teddy on the first show and I know now, I could watch it every day for the rest of my life and never get bored of it! It's worth the cost alone! If you like Elvis in the 50s it's a must, it won't let you down. I have seen 'poor quality' and 'not woth having' I own nearly everything and I think this is just up there with the best. There is allsorts of other stuff. Highly recommended, buy it you won't be dissappointed.
