Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Elvis Presley's first film, LOVE ME TENDER, included music as an afterthought, but music was the priority in his next, LOVING YOU. Four of the seven songs were hits, while "Mean Woman Blues" has been recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and many others. "(Let's Have A) Party" at 90 seconds is the shortest single ever to make the charts, a peculiar achievement as Elvis has an additional verse in the film. Fans used to send Elvis Presley teddy bears, hence the song of the same name. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote one of their finest ballads with "Loving You", a song comparable to Cole Porter's "True Love" which, in turn, completed this 8-track,10-inch album. In the USA, the album was issued in 12-inch format and the four additional tracks, including "Blueberry Hill", were released on an EP in the UK.
Customer Reviews
Where the material just came flooding in
The traditional issues with material where blown away in the new year. Claude Demetrius wrote the great tough rock'n'roll song "Mean Woman Blues", Schroeder and Weisman contributed the flat out "Gotta Lotta Livin' To Do", two of the best rock'n'roll songs Elvis ever recorded. The country "Have I Told you Lately", "Don't Leave Me Now" and "I need you so" are wonderful, varied and powerful. Elvis was now at his best!
The additions to the album are less than enlightening. The reasons for omitting the wonderful "All Shook Up" doesn't make any sense at all. Instead you get the tough gospel flavoured "Tell Me Why" and two songs Elvis never really got on top of, "When It Rains" and "I Beg Of You".
The highlights of the additional material though is the 'dirty' version of One Night, simpler piano driven version when compared to the the superior version record a few months later, but fine never the less. As his is beautiful rendition of the lovely "Is It So Strange", just gorgeous.
A little uneven, but plenty to like
This expanded and delightfully remastered re-release of Elvis Presley's third LP is not as ground-breaking as his eponymous first LP, but it is almost as good as his second.
The album opens with seven songs from the 1957 movie "Loving You", and a few of those are forgettable at best, but that is easily forgiven when you hear "Mean Woman Blues", the driving "Got A Lot O' Livin' To Do", or the silly but irresistable "Teddy Bear".
The "non-soundtrack" songs include a very credible "Blueberry Hill", the grand "Don't Leave Me Now", and a great "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" (obviously not the Van Morrison song that Rod Stewart covered). And the bonus tracks "One Night Of Sin" (an alternate to "One Night With You") and "When It Rains, It Really Pours" are also among the highlights.
"Loving You" is a little bit uneven, and it may be too much pop for some listeners, but there is plenty to like.
HIS VERY FIRST GREAT SOUNDTRACK ALBUM
This was the third Elvis album, and the first soundtrack one; this cd has an incredible collection of songs and every track demostrates how marvelous is his own style to sing; more great balalds like the number one hit LOVING YOU, TRUE LOVE, TELL ME WHY and IT'S SO STRANGE; excellent Rock'n'roll numbers like MEAN WOMAN BLUES, PARTY, HOT DOG and GOT A LOT O' LIVING TO DO; there are some thypical country songs like LONESOME COWBOY, the number one TEDDY BEAR and BLUEBERRY HILL. This album also contains an unreleased versions of the songs ONE NIGHT (OF SIN) and I BEG OF YOU; If you loves Rock, Pop and American music, YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS ONE!!!
