A Welcome Comeback!
Although The Muppets appeal to all ages, they are definately fondly thought of by people of a certain age. I am one of those people - people who were of school age when the original run of the show appeared on TV during the late 1970s and then recall seeing the first three films when they were released at the cinema during the '80s. The Muppets have never been away - they have been around in one form or another for all of their 27(?) years - but only now that the company has hit troubled times have the people at Henson's seen the value in re-releasing their back-catalogue on DVD. With Disney now (or very soon) pulling the Muppet strings we can only expect more exposure and merchandise to come.
This boxed set comes at the same time as DVD releases of The Fraggles, more Bear in the Big Blue House, other Muppet titles, Henson's take on The Cat in the Hat and the more 'grown up' Henson films (Dark Crystal et al.). This, however, is the jewel in the crown containing as it does, The Muppet Movie (wonderfully lively if a little sentimental), The Great Muppet Caper (in my opinion the best of the Muppet movies since it displays all of the anarchy of the original show), The Muppets Take Manhatten (again, overly sentimental in places, but it has it's moments including the introduction of The Muppet Babies) and (I think I'm right with this) Muppets From Space (Okay, but like much of the more recent Muppet output, lacking a certain charm).
All things considered, a real must-buy just for the films although I hope that each film has some extras to them and this isn't just a boxed re-issue of the (virtually) vanilla discs of several years ago.
Brilliant!
I'm so pleased this is being released here at last. These are, in my opinion, the four best muppet films. The first two - the Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper - are by far the best of the four. They have a sophistication and wit that beats any of the modern muppet films. Of course, they're still great to entertain kids, but they work as plain old comedies (not just kids' comedies).
Let's not forget, too, that in those two early films and the third one - Muppets take Manhatten - there are some classic original musical numbers.
I wish all comedies could be this good.
