About the Author
Manda Scott began writing while still a veterinary surgeon. Her first novel, a contemporary crime thriller, Hen's Teeth was shortlisted for the Orange Prize. Subsequent thrillers are Night Mares, Stronger than Death and No Good Deed, for which she was hailed by the Times as'one of Britain's most important crime writers'. Having served her writing apprenticeship, she went back in time to write the Boudica series, of which the first three books, Dreaming the Eagle, Dreaming the Bull and Dreaming the Hound , are also available in Bantam paperback. Along the way, she has moved from the lands of the Eceni (Norfolk) to the lands of the Silures (Shropshire) , where she lives with her partner, her lurcher and not nearly enough cats. She teaches shamanic dreaming courses based on the ethos described in the books, insofar as it may reasonably be applied to contemporary living. The Iceni (Eceni) dream wouldn't have lasted!5
I was drawn into the first book, then the second, felt the third didn't go very far in comparison with the first two and by the end of the fourth had come to the crushing conclusion that the Boudica's tribes were doomed anyway if of course what was written was historical and less of a statement of the author's 'inclinations'.

In no place did I find loving caring descriptions of heterosexual relationships; they were merely conducted to procreate or abuse, unlike the same sex ones that practically oozed off every page as being the one true relationship. Helloo? - bit self-defeating that.

The 'heterosexual relationship' angle was heavily swung towards abuse by rape rather than boy meets girl, falls in love; there was a bit of hasty "we must secure the next generation" fumblings going on before the final battle but that's about it.

That aside (and there was an awful lot of 'that' to read through), absolutely spot on regarding animals and as I usually pick holes in that side of things, then that's praise indeed.

Leaves you wondering though about this stuff we're taught at school about the Romans bringing their culture to this country.

Transported.5
Many writers can make you visualise the scene they are writing about, but Manda Scott has the skills to actually take you there, to make you believe you are there with her characters in person, witnessing the events in all four of her books. I found it un-put-downable from the first chapter of the first book, to the final words of this the fourth.
I recommend anyone to read them all, in order. Follow the Boudica through her life with the warriors, singers and dreamers of the ancient Britons, through the Roman invasion, to her truimph in her uprising, and her brother in his abduction into slavery and long, cruel journey through the Roman Legions, to leadership as a Decurion and eventual return to his kinsmen to fight against the very men he had once fought with, alongside his sister. A compelling and utterly believable story, and remarkably well written.

Immerse yourself in a forgotten world - amazing5
Having just read all four of the Boudica books back-to-back I cannot recommend them highly enough. Scott has recreated in incredible detail an era of tribal British life which has been largely lost to history. Fictionalised but well-researched and based on what we do know as fact, the world of the warrior Boudica and her family and her people is vividly brought to life and gripped me all the way through. Spiritual, sensual, spectacular battles, brilliantly written, and a poignant evocation of how we used to live in harmony with our lands until the Romans came and stamped out our native culture. Well worth getting drawn into!
