One of the best
I eagerly awaited this volume after coming late to the series and ploughing through the previous thirteen volumes at lightning speed ... and the same went for this one. I snapped it up and couldn't put it down until I'd finished it!
Mysterious and beautiful, Isuzu 'Rin' Sohma is at the centre of the unfolding events throughout most of this volume. It's great to learn about her backstory, which certainly one of the most dramatic and sad out of all the Sohmas (and that's saying something, since they all have their fair share of trauma!). Accordingly, the tone in both the writing and the art is darker than much of what has gone before, which made for a 'style departure' of sorts which I was pleasantly surprised by. (Not that the darkness was pleasant. Just that variety is always good!!)
Also interesting is the fact that some of the most major characters are secondary to Rin's backstory. Kyo hardly features at all in this volume, and as the story is from Rin's perspective, Tohru is played down more than usual, although she still features strongly (and it's great to see some proper interaction between her and Rin for once, rather than the short snatches we've had before!).
Rin's story permeates most of the volume, but towards the end we are treated to some more classic moments from the intrepid School Defense Force - one of the most enjoyable side notes to the main story. Again, less of Tohru - but the interaction between vice-president Kakeru and Yuki is funny and touching.
I don't want to give too much away. Read this volume - it's well worth it! Roll on volume 15 ...
