Amazon.co.uk Review
Hit man Martin Q Blank (John Cusack) is in an awkward situation. Several of them, actually. He's attending his high school reunion on an assignment; he's got a rival hit man (Dan Aykroyd) on his tail; and he's going to have to explain to his old girlfriend (Minnie Driver) why he stood her up on prom night. Grosse Pointe Blank is an amiable black comedy, cowritten by Cusack and directed by Jonathan Demme protégé George Armitage (Miami Blues), has the feel of Demme's Something Wild and Married to the Mob--which is to say its humour is dark and brightly coloured at the same time. Cusack and Driver are utterly charming--as is the leading man's sister, Joan, who plays his secretary. (Cusack received an Oscar nomination for her next role, in In & Out.) Alan Arkin is also very funny as Martin's psychiatrist. --Jim Emerson

Synopsis
A nihilistically philosophical hit man (John Cusack) reluctantly accepts an assignment in Detroit, coinciding with his 10-year high school reunion in the ritzy suburb of Grosse Point, Michigan. While in town, he tries to patch things up with the girlfriend (Minnie Driver) he abandoned on prom night, avoid being killed by an over-zealous competitor's henchmen, and survive his surreal homecoming. The film is a bullet-ridden, darkly comedic tale of self-discovery from star-writer-producer Cusack.
Customer Reviews
I can watch this again and again...
I chanced on this by accident one night on Sky. I actually thought it was the original Point Blank with Lee Marvin
I was really pleasantly surprised that it wasn't! The characters, the era, the music at the reunion and the comedy just struck a chord. The comedy is offbeat and dark. The action is well paced and Joan Cusack is outstanding as the PA to the assassin. This is a gem. There are lots of familiar things in this movie that just feel right. By the way, I don't like sitting with my back to the door either...
I like this film- BUT WHY???
John Cusack; Minnie Driver; Dan Ackroyd & Hank 'Nahasapeemapetilon'
Azaria...
That's a list of names I watch with some interest, even if I don't
particularly like them (Ackroyd). They've all got good bodies of work
behind them and, with Cusack in particular, if I see the name; I'll
watch a poor film just for them.
Yet there is something about this movie that never adds up. I mean, I
like this film. It keeps me watching the screen at all times (a rare
occurrence), but there are so many things that are left as sloppy. I
never believe that Cusack is a real hit-man- Ackroyd's that fat & he
can't shoot him despite using that many bullets????
I don't believe that Driver ever was angry with our hero- Cusack
walks in after TEN years and she slaps him once 90 minutes into the
flick??? SHe doesn't even raise her voice...
And my personal favourite- the Estate Agent friend, who hasn't
seen Cusack in a decade, finds him sitting next to dead body and helps
him stuff the corpse in the school furnace not uttering one word, or even muttering under his breath.
I don't believe these people. And as for the last ten minutes- I think
the writers just said "Nuts we gotta do something" and just let there
fingers hit the keyboard without letting there brains get in the way.
But I still give it a good 4/5; and most of that it the performances.
Something about Driver & Cusack is believable, like they were really
good friends off camera. I don't know what it was but two very good
things do stand out- the Soundtrack was brilliant; and for the first
time since I've seen her I didn't want to switch over when Joan Cusack
was on screen (something of a minor miracle on my part).
In closing; watch the film, you'll enjoy it but when you watch it
again- You May Wonder Why...
My Top 10 All Time Great Films
I really enjoyed this John Cusack and Minnie Driver film because of the brilliant script, acting, and pure entertainment on offer.
Martin Blank (John Cusack) finds himself back in his home town where nobody has seen him for 10 years since he just left town on prom night. What has he being doing, why did he leave, why is he back, and why is he being followed?
The whole film is tongue-in-cheek comedy that hits the right spot. A bit of light romance, out-of-nowhere explosive action scenes, the FBI, and a whole great film. You will not be disappointed, watch it now.
