	The Life of Samuel Johnson (Wordsworth Classics of World Literature) by James Boswell Buy used from: £6.48 The book that everyone has heard of, but very few have read. Read it! Johnson and Boswell are one of literature's greatest, and oddest, couples.
	Far from the Madding Crowd (Penguin Classics) by Thomas Hardy Buy new: £1.90 / Used from: £0.01 Okay, so it's not Hardy's best novel, but it's by far his happiest and his most entertaining.
	Waterland by Graham Swift Buy new: £6.35 / Used from: £0.14 Some of this is looking a little dated now, but in this tragic tale of the East Anglian Fens, Swift produced one of the most beautiful books of the 1980s.
	A E. Housman: Collected Poems (Penguin Poetry Library) by A.E. Housman Buy new: £3.74 / Used from: £2.87 Sentimental, pessimistic, narrow. Okay, it's all those things, but it's still worth reading and it's still wonderful poetry.
	A Confederacy of Dunces (Penguin Modern Classics) by John Kennedy Toole Buy new: £3.78 / Used from: £2.92 One of the great comic novels of the twentieth century. Wonderfully funny, but also wholeheartedly sympathetic.
	The Napoleon of Notting Hill (Penguin Twentieth Century Classics) by G.K. Chesterton Buy used from: £3.99 If you look at a thing nine hundred and ninety-nine times, you are perfectly safe; if you look at it the thousandth time, you are in frightful danger of seeing it for the first time.
	The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro Buy used from: £0.01 So is he as collected as he seems? Or is it all just an act? One of the best modern love stories.
	Rubaiyat (Penguin Poetry Library) by Omar Khayyam Buy used from: £0.01 Part pessimist philosophy, part drinking song- all of it magical poetry. Not read much nowadays, but still great stuff.
	Mere Christianity ( A revised and amplified edition with a new introduction of the 3 books, Broadcast Talks, Christian Behaviour and Beyond Personality by C.S. Lewis Buy used from: £2.80 Definitely not one for bible-bashers; this is one of the most sane, lucid explanations of Christianity and is filled with Lewis' deeply felt faith.
	Pnin (Penguin Modern Classics) by Vladimir Nabokov Buy new: £3.58 / Used from: £4.00 This tends to be overlooked in favour of Lolita, but in Pnin Nabokov created a truly comic and truly tragic character.
	The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (Penguin Modern Classics) by Carson McCullers Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £4.23 It's hard to say exactly what is so great about this book; in her first novel, McCullers effortlessly combines loneliness and hope.
	The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Buy new: £4.90 / Used from: £2.97 A legend in it's own time and, apparently, the assassin's book of choice; read and see what the fuss is about.
