The Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range in Spain, provides tremendous scope for the adventurous mountain traveller: there are rugged peaks over 3000m (Alta Montana), remote valleys, crystal-clear streams and some very interesting scenery among the lower limestone peaks of Baja Montana. Mountain bikers will find plenty of routes to explore; in winter there are snow sports galore, from dowhill skiing and snowboarding to nordic ski tours, and winter mountaineering. With the tourist excesses of the Alps thankfully still absent here, the Sierra Nevada can provide the kind of experience which is now becoming rare in many of the world's other mountain areas. This guide covers the high sector of the range and will prove invaluable to any visitor to the area. There is information on camping and accommodation, road access, mountain-biking routes, local bases, topography and climate, as well as descriptions of 50 walking routes that vary in length from 3km to 56km.

Review
The Nevadas are a long, curved ridge, 100km in length, which reach a maximum height of 3,482m near Granada, at the eastern end. The Author describes them as like the Black Cuillin on Skye, without the mist! He outlines 45 routes, from easy half day walks to arduous multi-mountain expeditions. Good introduction, maps, photos and glossary, and strong weather-resistant covers. Walking World Ireland, May/June 2006 'This guide is a second edition of one first published in 1996 and was necessitated by the significant developments in road access and mountain accommodation in the region. The guide is clearly presented, contains a useful introduction and is well illustrated. It will be invaluable to visitors to the area.' Irish Mountain Log Magazine, Summer 2006
About the Author
Andy Walmsley was born in Preston, Lancashire on December 18th 1959. From an early age mountains always held a fascination for him, and early family holidays to mountainous areas of Europe and Britain began a deep affection for the wild places. Having been active in sports such as cycling, caving, and fellwalking for many years, Andy began his exploration of the Sierra Nevada in the 1980s whilst visiting relatives in Granada and this book is the result of all his explorations from that time until 2004. Despite a serious motorcycle accident in 1981, in which he lost his right arm, Andy remains an active mountain-goer. He took up the arduous sport of fellrunning in 1985 and still competes in mountain events all over the British Isles. In 1989 he set a record of 15 hours and 5 minutes for the traverse of all the Sierra Nevada's 3000m peaks - the 'Integral de Los Tres Mil' - which still stands today.

Useless without corresponding maps!
I bought this book because it looked ideal for what I would need to organise a hiking holiday in the Sierra Nevada. The actual routes look nice and the descriptions seem good - until you realise there are no maps whatsoever in the book - not even a start position, let alone a summary of the route!
The descriptions of the walks are too vague to be much use, as anyone who's walked in such areas will know that much of it is scrubland and therefore "follow the indistinct trail generally upwards to the top of the hill" is completely useless as a direction.
This book would be great if each route had a decent, 1:25000 map with it but in its current state I'm afraid you would just end up getting hideously lost. I would have returned it except it got a bit dog-eared going to/from Spain and it would have been unfair to return it...
Walking we want it
Nice write up about the walks but not very constructive maps. Makes you believe everybody wants to climb the peaks....they dont, most of us just want to walk the trails. Could have spent more time dicussing the villages and paths, very scant detail. I reccomend Guy Hunter Watts books, much more info and detail. At the moment they dont cover much of the Sierra Nevada trails but we can hope for more writing soon.
