Amazon.co.uk Review
Bette Midler plays a Janis Joplin-like singer overwhelmed by stardom and its excesses. Mark Rydell (On Golden Pond) directs what is a kind of hybrid showcase for Midler's concert talents and a standard pop biopic, with the usual rhythms of desire, success, betrayal, failure, and such. Alan Bates is the best thing about the movie as the Rose's ruthless manager, and Harry Dean Stanton and Frederic Forrest add some interesting seasoning. But as a whole, the film can't rise above its mixed purposes or clichés. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis
In this authentic, entertaining, and tragic film, Bette Midler plays Rose, a talented but exhausted, alcoholic rock star whose entire life is controlled by her cutthroat manager, Rudge (Alan Bates). Taking a bleak look at the downside of the music industry, THE ROSE chronicles the precipitous fall of this fictional rock & roll diva (modeled after Janis Joplin) as she nears a concert date in her home town that she hasn't been to in years. Pulled down by raging alcoholism and drug addiction, as well as her own insecurities, Rose's life begins to deteriorate to the point of complete self-destruction, all the while begging Rudge for a break in her grueling tour schedule. This raw, uncompromising, witty, and ultimately heartbreaking film includes several incredible musical performances by Midler in actual concert settings. THE ROSE is Midler's first role as an actress, and she embodies the alternately frenetic, worn-out, enraged, and sweetly insecure star with an almost inconceivable power, especially when interacting with her love, the faithfully adoring Dyer (Frederic Forrest).

Bette should of been given the Oscar she deserved !!!5
This is Bette Midler's finest film role and acting of her whole career. She was nominated for an Oscar, but sadly lost out, which was such a shame. There have been a couple of other films, Beaches, but sadly not the same emotion and punch.

I watched `The Rose' years and years ago, it was playing on Channel 4 over a Christmas period. I purchased this a couple of months ago, and even today it is NOT out dated. The performance from Bette Midler is awesome, funny, moving and tragic. Even after nearly 30 years, the ending still made me cry. The last song Bette sings, toward the end of the film, is just SOOOO powerful and moving.

The only other two songs that can be placed on the same level of emotion and feeling is Purple Rain; Prince and, Emma; cover version by Sisters of Mercy.

As with other performers of this era, they were just used to ensure the bigots got fat on their profits. So sad, such a tragic short life of such a great lyricist and performer.

For those who are not into this style of film, give it ago, I can honestly say you will watch a powerful and moving film. If you dont like the music, you will love Bette in her best acting role of all time.

`Stay with me baby'.... just writing those few words have given me HUGE goosepimples !!

Bette Midler at her best!5
This is Bette Midlers first film. A part she was born to play- The Rose is the biggest rock star around- this film shows you the ups and down of life in the 60's for these rock stars. We see Rose fall in love, go on tour and sing her heart out.
The best scene in the film is the Phone booth scene, one of Bette favs, Rose calls her parents after arriving in town for the Home town show- her parents are not coming to the show, you can true;y see in this scene why Bette was nonminated for an Oscar in this film.

NEVER A MAJOR BETTE FAN BUT THIS IS OUTSTANDING5
The one thing i see when i look at this film is the huge promising start Bette Midler gave to her first motion picture and that there was a genuine future film megastar.
Fast forward to 2005 and she has and never will top her oscar nominated roll in 'The Rose' and its a shame to have seen her take on such run of the mill comedies in the early 80s and 90s.Don't get me wrong 'Big Buisness' ' Outrageous Fortune' and 'Hocus Pocus' are all good little entertaining comedies but when you look at The Rose you just wanna say 'What happend in your film role decisions'.She could have become a serious Hollywood actress.
The film is stunning with the high point being the live stage performances which are incredible.Theres no doubt the lady can sing and her voice on tracks like 'When a man loves a woman' and 'Midnight in Memphis' are astounding. She gets the whole Joplin rock star down to a tee and plays it like she was born for the roll. The camera work capturing her on stage persona is awesome the only slightly dissapointing part is the end at her homecoming Texas show.
It easy to see why she was nominated for an oscar as this is hugley entertaining and touching. She is some parts reminds me more of Stevie Nicks that Janis Joplin and they get the whole rock lifestyle to a tee.
Midler has only had 2 other films to match the success and following that this got 'Beaches ' and 'The First Wives Club' but still they pale in comparison.Outstanding.
