Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
A group of greedy bounty hunters led by the brutal Loco (Klaus Kinski) are in pursuit of a band of outlaws who have escaped and are hiding out in the hills of the snowy Utah frontier. After an innocent man is killed with no remorse, a mute gunslinger named Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is called upon by the man's wife to seek revenge. Standing between the innocents and the corrupted bounty hunters, Silence decides to mete out his own brand of justice, even though the lines between the bad and the good have already been blurred. Famed Italian director Serio Corbucci (DJANGO) helmed this bleak, stylish, and violent spaghetti western, which features a score from Ennio Morricone.

Customer Reviews

Simply stunning!5
Other reviewers have given a good account of this movie.
The score, by Ennio Morricone is simply stunning, and has been crafted to flow with the beautiful snowy landscape, the cinematography is stunning, and the acting pristine.
Somebody said the dialogue is 'clunky', well, I wouldn't go that far, the dialogue is part and parcel of the whole picture and I thought was apt, but it has been dubbed in English and obviously, in the original Italian version, the dialogue is perfect.
And I wouldn't call it a 'rip off'! a nonsense statement. It's like suggesting Goodfellas is a rip off of Scarface!
This film is far far more complex and clever than any of Leone's movies, Corbucci was very much Left Wing in his political views, and these views are expressed explicitly in this film - in some of his others too. Watch and see!

A stunning unexpected finale just tops up a masterpiece of film making, and a must for any film lover.

Leaves me wanting more Spaghetti in my Western5
Directed By Sergio Corbucci in 1968 The great silence is still a great hit today.
It realy is a great Spaghetti western filmed nicely with great atmosphere and in this movie i loved the bright red colour of the blood.
Staring Klaus Kinski and Jean-Louis Trintignant who plays Silent the mute character dont want to give to much away about the story there is an alternative happy ending on the dvd and a brilliant score by Ennio Morricone.

Quietly flawed masterpiece3
The most worthy of Corbuccis Leone rip-offs . Bad dialogue and sometimes clunky direction can be easly overlooked when you consider the overall feel and tone of this fascinating piece . This one truly stands alone in the western genre . And rightly so . Even Leone or any of his other numerous imitatiors never came close to a plot like this . The ending is so downbeat that its producers orderd a whole new ending for distribution to certain countries!!!Guess Where!!
This DVD contains the original unbowdlerized version in its enhanced widescreen format and contains the Totally Daft re-shot ending as DVD extra .
Never has a re-shoot been so unbelievably , comically bad . It compares to the worst carry-on scenario you will ever see .
Mind Boggling .
The original ending of this film set a precedent which,in my opionion, has not yet been equalled.Downbeat.Cynical.Horrible.But a true end to a unique story......peace to y'all
