Amazon.co.uk Review
Dead Leaves is the latest installment in the collaboration between Manga Entertainment and Production I.G. that brought viewers Blood: The Last Vampire (2001) and Kai Doh Maru (2003). But Dead Leaves, which suggests a mixture of Ninja Scroll and Inspector Zim designed by Peter Chung, lacks the sensual elegance of the earlier OVAs. Retro, who has a television set for a head, and Pandy awaken with their memories erased. Sent to the lunar prison of Dead Leaves, they contrive an escape with hordes of other inmates. A long, pointless slaughter ensues, with blood, bullets, and body parts flying across the screen. The frame is so cluttered with angular characters, bright colors, Japanese and English words, mechanical devices, and gore, it's difficult to follow the frenetic action, let alone the fragmentary story. (Unrated, suitable for ages 17 and older: brief nudity, extensive violence, profanity, sexual humor, toilet humor, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

Synopsis
After awakening on Earth with no recollection of who they are or how they got there, strange beings Pandy and Retro go on a crime spree to fulfill their basic needs. During the course of it, they are apprehended and sent to Dead Leaves, a high tech prison on the moon. There, they discover that the facility is also used for cloning and bizarre genetic experiments which result in dangerous mutations. Before long, Pandy and Retro have enlisted the aid of their deformed fellow inmates in an attempt to escape the facility. This beautifully designed and highly offbeat anime was produced by Production I.G. (GHOST IN THE SHELL, KILL BILL), with character designs by Japanese pop artist Imatoonz.

the amazon reviewer is a tool5
im not a huge fan on anime, however, this film is brilliant! studio IG excel themselves everytime time they put somthing out there, and maybe this film is a bit off the wall and twisted but credit is due to them to even contemplate releasing a film like this that people are always gonna either love or hate, but this film is really wourth your time. and it is (even if not troditionally) beautiful, in its own way. in the end of the day though, its up to you if you like it or not, but be open minded. oh and anyone who thinks this is hard to follow... well... i dont think i should say!

Absolutely amazing. A must-see.5
What first drew my attention to this film was the amazing animation. As soon as I saw how fantastic it looked -- and the fact that everything is hand-drawn and coloured -- I had to get it.

Not knowing much about the basis of the story, I decided the whole look of the film was enough to warrant a purchase.

This film is absolutely crazy, that is quite clear after watching just 10 seconds. The animation (again) is absolutely astounding and is unlike anything I've ever seen before. With the constant explosions and gun-fire comes the use of comic book-style descriptive words being thrown at the screen. It makes for a visual style that is truly unforgettable.

The film itself is just 60 minutes, but this is plenty long enough with a film filled with so much action.

One thing that did strike me with Dead Leaves, however, is how perverted it is. One character, for instance, has a large cone-shaped drill as a penis. This is quite a dirty film, make no mistake. But it's not overly so, as various scenes will bring a laugh.

Overall this is massively recommended. A fantastic achievement in animation.

Short and nasty5
Who comes up with this stuff? A guy with a TV for a head? another with a drill where *ahem* another...part of his anatomy should be? Nightmare! Somehow though this film works, its naughty, incredibly gory, stupid, and really funny. The art style is fantastic too. The only downside is that its only 60 minutes long. Another top film from Manga, probably might want to avoid eating while watching it though.
