Amazon.co.uk Review
In delivering non-18-rated excitement, Alien vs. Predator is an acceptably average science-fiction action thriller with some noteworthy highlights, even if it squanders its opportunity to intelligently combine two popular franchises. Rabid fans can justifiably ask "Is that all there is?" after a decade of development hell and eager anticipation, but we're compensated by reasonably logical connections to the Alien legacy and the still-kicking Predator franchise (which hinted at AVP rivalry at the end of Predator 2); some cleverly claustrophobic sets, tense atmosphere and impressive digital effects; and a climactic AVP smackdown that's not half bad. This disposable junk should've been better, but nobody who's seen Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil should be surprised by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson's lack of imagination. As a brisk, 90-minute exercise in generic thrills, however, Anderson's work is occasionally impressive... right up to his shameless opening for yet another sequel. --Jeff Shannon
DVD Description
A team of scientists find themselves caught in the middle of a fight to the death between a group of Predators and Aliens - whoever wins, we loose.
Synopsis
When audiences caught a glimpse of an alien skull mounted in the trophy cabinet of a Predator in the 1990 film PREDATOR 2, it seemed a franchise was about to be born. Sure enough, comic book artists immediately seized on the possibilities suggested by the brief scene, and a number of skirmishes between the deadly foes were played out on the printed page. Fans have had to endure a lengthy wait for a cinematic match-up, but writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson (EVENT HORIZON) has finally delivered the blood-splattered goods in ALIEN VS. PREDATOR. Set in the near future, a team of archaeologists lead by Charles Wiedland (Lance Henriksen, returning for more ALIEN action after appearances in the second and third films) ventures towards an inexplicable hot zone detected in Antarctica. Joined by Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan) and the requisite amount of human fodder for the otherworldly creatures to feast on, Wiedland and his cohorts discover a sizeable underground pyramid. Chaos ensues as they awake the Queen alien from her blissful slumber, causing face-hugging and chest-bursting scenes aplenty. But the ailing crew has a further quandary to grapple with in the shape of some fearsome Predators, who are using the aliens as bait for their offspring to brawl with in an ancient initiation ritual. With the human team trapped in the labyrinth-like pyramid, the battle evolves into a nail-biting three-way tussle between the archaeologists and their extraterrestrial adversaries. Fans of both the ALIEN and PREDATOR movies should find much to satiate their appetites here, and with an ending suggesting further hostilities between the pernicious coupling, this one looks set to run and run.

AVP
I think people are reviewing AVP abit harshley oh sure its not the best film to ever come along but it's most deffinitly not the worst. And a little pointer to those who say "Oh its a B movie Alien n Predator would never meet" to them I say please go and watch Predator 2 because I and 30000 over people recall seeing an Alien skull on the trophy rack.
Ok anyway time for the review Alien Vs Predator:
The plot YES their IS a plot!! Centuries ago Predators were worshiped as Gods on earth and taught man how to civilise and build etc, In return all they wanted was a sacrafice to breed the ultimate prey (Alien, well ok so its a little unexplained where they got the aliens from but nevermind its a sci fi it doesnt have to make sense)
During the century long break Alaska has been used as a hunting ground for young predators to earn their rank and prove themselves by hunting Aleins and bringing back as many skulls as they can.
Eventually Wayland Yutani recive a climate discovery in Alaska and are sent into investigate what it is, Throughout the film they get caught in a warzone between the Two alien species.
The acting in this film is pretty shcoking at times with the exception of the guy that played Bishop in Alen and Aliens.
And a little too much on the CGI with the Aliens when you consider that the original Alien movies excluding 3 nd ressurection where all a guy in a realistic looking suit but some of the fight scenes make up for it.
Overall if your a fan of action/sci fi/horror films then your going to like not love AVP but if your a die hard alien and predator fan you might feel a little bit cheated by this new incarnation.
The story is ok the action is good the acting is forgivable.
At the price being offerd its a good cheap thrill.
Worth a rent at least.
An entertaining film
a lot of people have pinned this film down for being a pg-13 (or 15, even) instead of an R rating (or 18). Ok, so that does affect the movie somewhat, but not that badly. if you get it out of your mind that the rating is lowered, and just sit back and watch it, then it is actually a good movie. not great, but not bad either. a decent start to a possible franchise. it has aliens, predators, the humans and it gives the species a good reason to actually fight each other. there could have been more fight scenes, i'll give you that, and also the suspense was lacking aswell (and looking at Paul Anderson's previous work, like Event Horizon,he can definitely do suspense very well). the ending is left open, which is fine. All that needs to be done for the sequel is to improve on what was already good about this one (oh, and give us an 18/R rating please).
Not great, but frequently underestimated fun
Now that the sequel is out, I think it's time for a reassessment of the original "Aliens vs. Predator" film. Despite its faults, I never thought the first "AvP" movie was bad. Okay, the Aliens going from egg to full-grown warrior in about an hour was ridiculous in the extreme, but the rest of it ain't that bad.
Plot-wise, it's based semi-loosely on the first "AvP" comic book by Dark Horse. You have the Yautja (Predators, for you non-übergeeks) setting up a rite-of-passage hunt for their adolescents. This involves luring some Humans to a hunting ground where they will become the hosts for some xenomorphs, which the Predator youngsters will then hunt for their first blooding. There's some VERY Danikenite backstory in there, which is VERY cool. And then the rest is adrenaline-fuelled carnage, with the Yautja originally out to kill the Aliens AND any surviving Humans, but, like the original, the last Predator teams up with the last Human to wipe out the hive.
It's SO close to the original Dark Horse story, that I think I would've preferred to see THAT filmed, but "AvP" does provide some nifty links and foreshadowing to hint at how Humanity gets from its current level of technology to the starfaring species seen in "Alien." Apart from the vastly improved special effects, "AvP" is not the best movie in the Fox Studios Vicious Beasties From Outer Space Franchise, but I still think it's worth a watch. (Also, it's got the painfully cool Lance Henriksen in it, and I happen to think Sanaa Lathan is real purty, which swung my opinion.) "Citizen Kane" it's not, but "AvP" scores so high on the Cool Graph for me that I'm willing to overlook most flaws. Except for the rapid-growth Aliens one.
If given the choice between a single-disc Regular Edition or a multi-disc Special Edition, I'll go for the latter every time. There are loads of nifty behind-the-scenes stuff on Disc 2 of this set, but those are mostly for the die-hard fans, like me. Casual viewers may want to save their money and get the single-disc Regular Version.
