Uninspired mangling of a classic
I haved loved both Ursula Le Guin's books and most of Studio Ghibli's films, and this film does justice to neither. I understand a film's need need to condense from the written word, and to find a visual way to tell a story, but there was no need to shift Jed's shadowy doppelganger onto another character altogether, completely distorting both of them. By using the title it has probably killed any chance of a good film - or three good films - being made from the material any time soon.
For those who don't know the books, but do appreciate the fresh and original storytelling of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, this feels more like a hackneyed Hollywood epic except for being a bit muddled. It has the fine design and animation we expect from Ghibli but falls short where it matters. I saw this at the cinema, and sadly it is the ONLY Ghibli film I will not add to my DVD collection.
A great anime
I am a big fan of anime and own almost everything made by studio ghibli (theres just that new film i havent got, just been relesed in japan, about a fish as far as i know?) as well a various other animes like akira and ghost in the shell and too many too name. let me start by saying that as with most ghibil films it has GREAT music and a good solid story, the animation is brilliant as youd expect from a ghbili film. The characters have good reason for being there (there not just added for the sake of it) the plot gets thicker and thicker as you go along and really draws you in, the story doesn't get boring because of the twists through the story. 10/10 for animation, 10/10 for story, 10/10 for Japanese dialogue 8/10 for English dialogue, 11/10 for music (its really good) and an overall score of 10/10. Quick some up: Get this film!!! :D
Alright. not one of Studio Ghibli's best.
The heroine, Teru, kept running away. The wizards were going around being sereious all the time and battling some bad guy.
I don't understand the story enough to love it but it was alright.
