very good value for money
i'm surprised at poor reviews. i am doing a fine art degree and wanted a cheap printer to use with my laptop. i have been printing pictures from my digital camera on a daily basis for the last 6 months with very few problems (i'm printing out maybe 20-30 images a day). the quality (at lowest picture setting on ordinary paper) is perfectly adequate for my research note recording. the only problem i've had has been using compatible cartridges - not all are appropriately chipped which then prevents the printer from recognising them. however at correct settings the ink consumption doesn't seem huge and newest compatibles advertised as chipped seem ok. i would definitely recommend this as a cheap readily portable and relatively inexpensive to run printer for anyone needing to produce a lot of pictures on a low budget.
Great little printer for a student! Bargain at £30
I ordered one of these at Christmas after I broke my last Epson changing the ink. I shopped around for a printer that I could use for general purposes and I have to say its fantastic! I am a student so wanted something cheap that would cover my printing needs of essays and good quality images every now and again.
I must say I have had no problems with ink monitoring like others seem to have. The ink monitor gives very clear levels of remaining ink and its easy to see when your going to need to install replacements. There is a warning that pops up for every print when a cartridge is 25% full or less. Installation and cartridge replacement is very simple. I installed the printer in minutes and got cracking. The Epson inks that came with the printer gave very nice results although they did seem to run out very quickly. I agree that official cartridges are expensive at £6.99 or something. However I have been using compatible cartridges from ebay at £6.50 per set of 4 inks. They work just as good! You must make sure that the cartridges are compatible though as they need a new chip if the printer was produced after April 2007.
The print quality is great for £30. I use it for everything now from printing pictures to CD labels etc. As long as you select the appropriate print and paper settings (which is very easy) you will get a great print.
It is fairly slow and yes it can be a little noisy but let's be honest at £30 it's a steal. If you're a student it's ideal. If you're looking for a general use printer that you don't use that often it's ideal. If you're looking for an office printer for everyday heavy use then look elsewhere.
I would very highly recommend this printer. It has been a pleasure to use... so far...
what do you want for thirty quid?
i use this printer for document printing and i can't fault it.
there are huge downsides... it redefines flimsy, the first one we bought was faulty and was replaced overnight by epson, it is noisy and it is pretty expensive on ink.
but... it costs 30 quid, it does what it says on the box and if you set the paper type correctly to minimise ink use it does pretty well. you surely cannot expect any kind of photo printer for this price. i use an hp 9180 for photos (£400+)and it too stops totally when a cartridge runs out. it's also very expensive on ink and it makes a noise and vibrates enough to scares the neighbours.
it's horses for courses. use this one for what it does best and it's astounding value. if it lasts a year (and i'd be surprised if it lasts much longer) for this price it demonstrates we live in a landfill society.
