    Cheaper Than Chips, But Just As Nasty2
    These days almost any photo printer will produce prints that are indistinguishable from the real thing (whatever that is!) Similarly, any scanner should be able to capture with a degree of fidelity that would have been hard to achieve even five years ago.

    So, the value of a device like this comes from how it performs in its intended role, rather than from the quality of the results.

    As far as this machine is concerned there is good news and bad news.

    The good news.

    * It's cheap.
    * It's bulky.
    * The four ink cartridges are individually replaceable and also cheap.
    * The quality (on scanning, copying and printing) is good.
    * The scanning software is comprehensive, with image correction and the facility to scan multiple images in one pass.
    * Scanning is quite fast.

    The bad news.

    * It's noisy. Very noisy.
    * Printing speeds are very slow.
    * Starting from cold takes forever, making printing single jobs an extremely time consuming process.
    * There is no useful draft mode, unless you count "practically invisible" as useful.
    * The black ink reservoir is the same capacity as the colour reservoirs, meaning it will run out with frightening regularity.
    * The angled scanning surface doesn't hold the originals in place as you close the lid.
    * There is a distinct lack of detailed printing options.

    This is a cheap but not so cheerful solution to home printing and scanning. I bought it for a one off job (scanning huge numbers of old photographs) and will happily consign it to the spoil heap of history as soon as the job is done.

    And I won't be buying Epson in a hurry again.

    Epson again4
    When the time came to replace my printer I looked at the reviews and I was surprised by the adverse comments on the DX4400. Despite these I went ahead and bought it - 5 stars to Amazon for their v. fast and efficient service. The DX is a little noisier than my last Epson but nothing to complain about. Touch wood the initial cartridges are still going strong, installation was easy and | am satisfied with my purchase

    Unmatched ratio quality price. 5
    I went to buy a single black cartridge for an old printer of a different manufacturer at the price of 26.99 pounds! Well the printer was extremelly noise and expensive to run. I saw this particular model: Epson DX4400, I still having my old Epson Stylus Photo EX (A3 format), wonderful machine and quite robust ( I print two PhD with this with no problem at all, 10 copies each + 9 years of heavy duty work!), so I saw this one for 39 pounds with high definition printing (photo quality), scan and includes individual cartridges (cost of each of them 6.5 pounds), all colours (including black) 21 pounds pack, half of the price of the old one and goes at 5700X1440 DPI, knowing Epson it simply can' t go wrong. The only little frustation is it does not come with the UBS cable but it can be bought at amazon for 1.34 pounds!
