Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
The whole history of the acoustic guitar could possibly reconstructed from this one outstanding recording. More than a few guitarists have a thorough and informed grasp of the many diverse traditions associated with the instrument. However, few have Towner's natural ability to spread these traditions out on an equal footing and to then build upon them to create a style of composition and performance which is entirely distinctive yet of universal appeal. Such a statement seems to imply cultural (and temporal) tourism of the worst sort, yet the ease with which the guitarist can apply the runs-and-tumbles of the classical tradition to a folk riff, or the thuds and snaps of the avant-garde to a loose, meandering blues structure without there ever being a note or a noise out of place is quite extraordinary. His earlier experience as a pianist clearly continues to inform his work, and his preference for the traditional Spanish instrument imbues his work with an unsurpassed tonal richness. --Roger Thomas

CD Description
ANA is Ralph Towner's 17th release for the ECM label, and his first solo guitar recording since 1979's SOLO CONCERT. Hecontinues to transcend the boundaries and conventions of traditional guitar playing; his compositions speak with a quiet intensity that blurs the line between jazz and classical music. Pieces such as "Tale of Saverio" and "I Knew It Was You" highlight the strength and elegance of his classical guitar playing, while showcasing the harmonic and rhythmic depthof his improvisation--a vital component of his work.
On "Seven Pieces for Twelve Strings", Towner demonstrates why, arguably, he has no peers on the 12-string guitar. His concept is unique, and he has developed a language of his own on the instrument. "Toru", with its altered tuning, and "Sage Brush Rider", with its cascading flourishes and controlled burn, show an artist who continues to refine a very personal voice and musical vision.
