Excellent
An excellent short course in Portuguese, i would recommend this if you are, as i was, a complete beginner looking to pick up the basics. In combination with a Portuguese dictionary i had no problems making myself understood on a recent trip. The book is well set out and easy to follow.
Too much music, too little language
This was the CD course recommended to me by my language teacher. It comes with 2 CDs and a booklet to which it constantly refers. And therein lies its weakness.
The actual Portugues is fine, and it's all upbeat and jolly in attitude. But firstly I don't think they repeat the phrases anywhere near enough, nor slowly enough. Coupled with the constant references to Page this and Exercise that, it quickly becomes difficult to follow what it is you're meant to be doing when playing the CD in isolation - in the car, for example.
And the music jingle at every opportunity will have you reaching for the off button too.
I will persevere to the (bitter) end having bought it, as it does actually contain the Portugues I need to learn; I just wish it was organised better, without constant references to the booklet and without that very annoying jingle!
Useful for a holiday in Portugal
I think this is a good course for holiday Portuguese. It gave you all the basic phrases for most situations for tourists. The organisation of the chapters are good and you get quite a lot of practise. Having said that, I would have liked a bit more grammar in the reference section. I managed to get through it in just over 5 weeks but I already speak French and Spanish, so the vocab is familiar to me. The accent and pronunciation, however, are a different cattle of fish. All in all, I found it a useful course and it did enhance my visit to Lisbon.
