Synopsis
The fifth season of the hit dramedy Desperate Housewives steps five years ahead, revealing the mysteries of the intervening years through clever flashbacks. There's plenty of juicy suburban drama here in the future: Bree (Marcia Cross) is enjoying great success as a chef and cookbook author, but managed to stab her partner, Katherine (Dana Delaney), in the back on her way to the top; the self-involved Gabrielle (Eva Longoria Parker) now has a toddler in tow; and Edie Britt (Nicollette Sheridan) has returned from exile toting a new spouse (who may or may not have a murderous streak). This collection includes every episode from the fifth series, as well as a plenty of bonus features.

good...but not as good as before
NB spoilers in this review
I've given this series 3 stars because, when compared to the many other TV series out there, it is rivetting, sharp, dramatic and laugh out loud funny. However, when compared to the previous 4 seasons (which could all be given at least ten stars) it falls flat. The mystery is not really a mystery at all but a drawn out scene involving a creepy man being a psycho in a number of different ways. There are no red herrings, no clues, no puzzles to work out. We are so used to being spoiled by the writers of DH, who until now have given us so many twists and turns it's hard to keep track of them all, that this cannot fail to disappoint. Also (I may be being stupid here) I was thoroughly confused by the ending - there appeared to be a flashback in which Dave's wife and daughter are not killed, and then he is shown in a mental institution. Can anyone explain this to me?!
However, I was not disappointed by the humour, which is simply fantastic, perhaps better in this season than it has ever been. All four women have some wonderful lines, especially Gabby who has really taken it up a gear this season. The men, however, are just a bit annoying... aside from Carlos (whose patient weariness is endearing and funny), we have Tom who acts like a five-year-old at all times, and Orson who is just a freak, and whose behaviour makes no sense.
We have also reached the point where the number of dramas suffered by the members of one street is ridiculous. I know it is meant to be melodramatic but sooner or later it will start to lose credibility. As much as it pains me to say it, it should have ended at the end of season 4.
Desperate Housewives - Season 5
Being a huge fan of the Desperate Housewives series, this season was dissapointing. As previous reviewers have said, the time jump of 5 years really did nothing to the plot. The writing is still good, but it's certainly not at it's best, many of the best lines going to Gabby (Eva Longoria Parker), who really does provide most of the humour this season. The 100th episode...actually not that great. Not as heartfelt and emotional as what it could have been and overall left you thinking 'was that it?' Which unfortunately, is a question that most of us seem to have been asking ourselves at the end of this season.
We also loose a much beloved member of the cast this series who will be deeply missed by many fans (personally, i don't think losing her was a good move at all on the writers behalf) and with ratings sinking in the U.S, the future of D.H doesn't look bright. It's not terrible, and seeing as I have Seasons 1-4 I almost feel I have to buy this boxset, so will look at it as hopefully just a weak season, a minor bump in the series which will hopefully improve in it's next season. But with (uncomfirmed) plans for a musical episode in season 6, this may well be the end to what was once a very, very good series.
Simply Brilliant
For me it was the most talked about mystery so far! Everyone was hooked in!
Delightfully dark (perhaps darker than any other season) and fantastically funny; one-liners are so well done in this show!
After a slight dip in ratings, the writers have really upped their game for season 5, and season 6 looks to be even better, so before that is aired buy this set NOW to re-live some classic DH moments!
S5 also contained the show's 100th episode; a true landmark, and a highly touching moment. Just one of the many reasons to purchase :)
