One star is one too many1
The first edition of this book showed poor writing skills, bad layout, and even worse proof-reading.

This is the second edition. The layout is greatly improved, and the proof-reading is a whole lot better. Unfortunately, however, the writing is as bad as ever, and is slightly less "spirited" than a dead fish.

The basic problem seems to be that this author confuses "quantity" with "quality". His output is indeed prodigious, but the books all tend to read like catalogues - all the facts, presented in a totally deadpan manner.

In practice there are now far too many NLP books available, of far higher quality, to leave much room for such poor writing.

For a good, all-round introduction to NLP, O'Connor and Seymour's "Introducing NLP" and O'Connor's "NLP Workbook" both leave this standing on the starting line.

Incidentally, the book categorically DOES NOT contain "significant contributions from other master trainers", not unless you imagine that simply quoting someone else means that they've made a "significant contribution" to your book.

In reality, for better oe worse, the writing is pure wall-to-wall Michael Hall.
If you've enjoyed any of Mr Hall's other books then you may enjoy this one as well. If you didn't, it's VERY unlikely that you'll like this one either.

The Spirit and the Essence of Mastery4
This book is NOT for beginners, and it is NOT that easy to read partly because it is written in E-Prime (which may avoid problems with "is" but creates problems of engagement) and partly because of the semantic conplexity of the ideas, not to mention the necessity of entering the NLP register and dealing with an enormous amount of meaning (and presupposition) laden words that are typical of an advanced level text, which this most certainly is. SO if you know your NLP this book is most definately the next step for you. What comes accross is a desire to open up the eyes of the Practitioner and encourage empowerment through a deepening of understanding of the models, deepening of qestioning and the installation of a propulsion system that carries the practitioner towards, through and beyond mastery. Of course nothing beats the experience of actually training with Richard Bandler, but this book seems to capture the essence of a training with him and the spirit of NLP mastery which he embodies. I enjoyed the mix of practice and theory and appreciated the erudition of the author. This is a book that requires a first read straight through to get an idea of the spirit, followed by numerous re-visits to get more and more of the essence. It has so much to offer, and is definiately a must for anyone who wants to think more about NLP and where it fits it thier map of the world. Well worth the effort, and cheap at half the price, it fits its intended audience well.

Superb advanced level book5
L Michael Hall is doing his best to give NLP some credibility in these troubled times. This is not an easy book to read, but if you`ve done practitioner training or gone through one of the more comprehensive introduction books - New technology of achievement (NLP Comprehensive) etc then this is the one to go for. Plenty of developments that should get NLP hard-wired into your day to day existence. Bandler`s brilliance becomes clearer for you to model - this is the spirit mentioned in the title.
