Product Description
The Plymouth Speedway team raced at Pennycross Stadium for twenty-two seasons between 1931 and 1970. The early promoters included one of the sport's great pioneers, George 'Jimmy' Baxter, who originated the concept of a league competition back in 1929, and the meetings attracted large crowds of loyal and dedicated supporters. Before the Second World War Plymouth were members of the National League for three seasons and all the best riders visited Pennycross. Frank Arthur, Vic Huxley, Jack Palmer and Bluey Wilkinson, to name just a few, thrilled the local supporters with their expertise on the track. After the war, Plymouth operated in the lower divisions but the racing was still close and exciting and featured up-and-coming stars like Cyril Roger and Wally Hunt who would go on to race at the highest level. Nearly fifty riders who have worn the Plymouth colours have made international appearances before, during, or after their Pennycross careers. Now, at the beginning of a new era for Plymouth Speedway, as the people of the South West look to the future with hope and anticipation, this book enables them also to look back at the team's earlier years; the good and bad times; the great riders and classic meetings. Featuring over 200 illustrations covering all twenty-two seasons, with informative accompanying text, this book will delight not only Plymouth fans but anyone who remembers the golden years of British speedway.
