Genius!5
I love this book. I love the two books that come afterwards! When I first read this book, I was about eleven or twelve and only just past the starting point of really getting into reading novels. Pullman is an absolute genius. It kept me hooked from start to finish and when I'd finished Northern Lights, I couldn't wait to read what was going to happen next in Subtle Knife and Amber Spyglass! For those who adore fantasy novels and Milton (the poet) as I do, will love this book because the trilogy and its theories are based around Milton's Paradise Lost, for example the dust (hence the quote at the beginning of Northern Lights, before the contents, which no doubt a lot of people have skipped. It is where the title of the trilogy comes from). Pure brilliance! Both my English Lecturer and I agree.

Best modern trilogy available!5
This was, put simply, the best trilogy of books I have read in a very long time. I usually wouldn't go for science fiction but this book came highly recommended. I can honestly say that by the end of the 1st book I was left thinking at times that the world really was just like it was described in the book! For the intelligent, confident reader this will prove impossible to put down!

Northern Lights5
Honestly? This book is amazing. I can see why it won the Carnegie Medal. Simply reading the first four words tells the reader that this is no ordinary book, and as it progresses, the story becomes more unique and beautiful.
The heroine, Lyra, is wonderful in that it is easy for any teenager to relate to her. I also thought the idea of a daemon was clever, and it made me want one of my own.
I thought the imagery was wonderful, the idea original and the plot gripping. Definitely one to read.
