Small and beautiful
It's only a personal prefernce but I like the smaller-sized rough guides and this one is real treat. I consider myself a big fan of BD but there's an amazing amount of detail in here that all but the most anorak bob-o-philes will not know. Lots of pictures to, discussion about albums, tours, notable people in BD's orbit, with even a little section on books and websites and the top 10 bootlegs!
A great book for the beginning fan, and sure to please the harder-core amongst fans too.
Well done rough guides!!
A Little Cracker (or stocking present)
A great little book that leaves you feeling you've read loads of the other Dylan stuff that you've not got the time to read. Well written and easy to read. It has a positive slant in Dylans favour even when re-evaluating much of the less classic periods that he is often slated for. Not rose tinted though. Ideal for a bit of light Bobology or as a gift to new converts or waverers.
An excellent quick reference point
Of course this is no "Bob Dylan Bible", but it is not intended to be. Its purpose is to be a reference point for quick and easy use. It does use other, more seminal, academic works as the basis for its biography section, but it is the discography which I find interesting. So many of the biographies are exactly that, biographies. There is often no rigid, chronological reference to the actual music, all mentions of it being linked to the text. That is why this handily priced book is so useful.
It is well-written on the whole, as all Rough Guides are, with an easy on the eye typeface. Personally I thought the "new Dylans" section was innovative and quite interesting, bearing in mind, of course, that "new Dylan" was a complete misnomer. There is only one Bob Dylan and this reference book helps one confirm that in bite-sized chunks. Ideal on the train or sunbathing reading.
