A bargain!5
Lee Hazlewood RIP. I hope they have Chivas in the next life Lee!

Buyers should note that this album is essentially a compilation of the 3 albums Lee recorded for MGM: Something Special, The Very Special World Of... and Lee Hazelwood-ism: Its Cause and Cure, with a few bonuses, all of which are now (finally) available individually on CD through the wonderful Water label. The Water editions feature the original artwork, but no bonus tracks, and this comp is a third of the price!

This is prime Hazlewood, and not to be missed at any price.

Welcome to the unique gravel tones of Mr Lee Hazlewood3
Billed as not quite country, not quite rock, and not quite lounge, but uniquely Lee Hazlewood.

I'll go with that, for this is one artist who - although wrote classic pop standards for people like Nancy Sinatra and Rock'n'roll legend Duane Eddy - when it came to his own recording style Mr Hazlewood followed no one. His whole style seems to stem from the Dean Martin school of "do we have to do this", but what it does do is give a sixties stylised sound which in todays manufactured tv pop culture, is a refreshing break. Containing all his single and album releases from the MGM years 1965-67, the title track "These boots are made for walking" instead of rivaling Nancy's version, he's complemented it with a typical Lee Hazlewood laid back references to the Nancy hit. Another very infecious track is "My baby cried all night long" with Lee's gravel voice meandering over a very polished arrangement, I found my self repeatedly going back for another listen.
Possibly to cash in on the success of himself and Nancy Sinatra, he did record duets with a singer called Suzi Jane Hokum. Included on this set is the song "Summer Wine" which he did record with Nancy, but the gem here is "Suzi Jane is back in town" which sounds like something right out of a sixties "B" western.
For the sixties collectors the cd contains the complete album "Something Special" which has become very rare indeed, to someone who wants to discover different sounds and likes the laid back styles of people who had their finger on the button, both in the recording studio and behind the microphone in the height of the swinging sixties, this cd is well worth the investment.
