Customer Reviews
great first sonic youth
The addition of the superb live material makes this one of Sonic Youth's best albums. The musicality is more accessible than with Confusion and Bad Moon Rising but it's still Sonic Youth and it captures their Branca influence strongly. I would rate this alongside Evol, Sister, the Whitey Album, Goo and Sonic Nurse as the very best albums capturing their development. I disagree with all the critics of Edson's drumming. The music wouldn't have been the same or as good without it. I should have included NYC Ghosts and Flowers in that list but I can't stand the cover design.
i hope I AM not alone.....
for years i always thought that the sonic youth debut album would be a dischordant and brutal. But then, it was finally re-released and i got a chance to actually listen to the debut that i hadnt really heard much about! As it begins with the tribal beat, i was really quite suprised! the thing that first struck me was the terrible drums (in my opinion) they almost sound like a drum machine, (well i suppose its a harsh comparison to make against a stick-master like steve shelley!) But once i managed to overlook the drums i really started to enjoy this rather suprising and peculiar album. The first track is a brilliant almost reggaesque seeming tribute to black uhuru, that has sonic youth's style and urgency writen all over it! (minus the terrible drum sound) i dreamed i dream is my favourite, and u can see where tracks such as shadow of a doubt have originated from! but its a really magical song, with really beautiful vocals from kim. she is not alone, is a classic, that is pretty haunting really. all in all, it doesnt really seem like a 'sonic yout' record on a first listen, but it grows on you and now i really love it! a great debut and a beautiful record!
