Buddha DaBuddha Da by Anne Donovan

This is about an ordinary man who discovers Buddhism. Read it with a Glaswegian accent. Serene and humble, uplifting and hopeful.
Far from the Madding Crowd (Penguin Popular Classics)Far from the Madding Crowd (Penguin Popular Classics) by Thomas Hardy

Enjoyed this the most out of the Hardy novels I've read so far. Earthy, dramatic, unputdownable.
Jude the Obscure (Oxford world's classics)Jude the Obscure (Oxford world's classics) by Thomas Hardy

A really bleak masterpiece. The most brilliant of the Hardy books I've read.
Under the Greenwood Tree (Oxford World's Classics)Under the Greenwood Tree (Oxford World's Classics) by Thomas Hardy

Rural and charming and not as brilliant as 'Jude' but beautifully written all the same.
Cider with Rosie (Vintage classics)Cider with Rosie (Vintage classics) by Laurie Lee

Aaah, I love this book! Like a dream. Beautifully descriptive. It's exactly what true Cotswold countryside is really like.
Catch-22Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Buy new: £3.59 / Used from: £1.58
This is unlike anything I've ever come across. A unique writing style: punchy, blunt, hilarious, unforgiving. You can really get your teeth into this one. I learnt a lot.
The Return of the Native (Penguin Classics)The Return of the Native (Penguin Classics) by Thomas Hardy

Well, it's Hardy. Great book. Bit of tragedy in this one.
I Know Why the Caged Bird SingsI Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

Skilfully written, often harrowing but there's joy in there too. The best book I've read all year.
The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials)The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials) by Philip Pullman

The final, most brilliant part of 'His Dark Materials'. This one is spellbinding and heartbreaking. Dazzling.
Red DustRed Dust by Ma Jian
Buy new: £6.39 / Used from: £0.40
So raw and unpolished, this. The only book on China I feel really captures the place and its people.
Skellig (Signature)Skellig (Signature) by David Almond

I'm so glad I read this. It's beautiful and tender and unearthly. Not just any kids' book.
