The Lathe Of Heaven (S.F. Masterworks)The Lathe Of Heaven (S.F. Masterworks) by Ursula Le Guin
Buy new: £2.30 / Used from: £2.30
My first meeting - and what a fantastic book to start with! I'd only read her Earthsea books before so expected some teen fantasy: how wrong I was, this is classic (and amazingly prescient) sci-fi!
Jennifer GovernmentJennifer Government by Max Barry
Buy new: £3.00 / Used from: £0.01
A hung parliament for this one: most of the guys liked it, but the girls weren't so impressed.
Under The SkinUnder The Skin by Michel Faber
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £1.93
My choice of book and I'm glad to say the book group unanimously loved it! This was the first time everyone agreed: this book's great for getting your teeth into.
Provender Gleed (Gollancz S.F.)Provender Gleed (Gollancz S.F.) by James Lovegrove
Buy new: £4.68 / Used from: £0.54
Pretty much all of us liked this book, and not at all swayed by receiving an email from the author giving us a bit of background on the book.
The Island of Dr Moreau (Penguin Classics)The Island of Dr Moreau (Penguin Classics) by H.G. Wells
Buy new: £1.82 / Used from: £2.38
I missed December's meeting so don't know how this classic went down with our 21st century readers...
Starship TroopersStarship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein
Buy new: £3.92 / Used from: £3.92
The first "Movie and Mocha" night, most of us seemed to rate the book but I prefered the movie.
Brave New World (Flamingo Modern Classics)Brave New World (Flamingo Modern Classics) by Aldous Huxley
Buy used from: £1.00
Another golden oldie, surprisingly still readable for a 1930s novel. Only six of us turned up for this one - the rest were probably taking a holiday on soma...
Black HoleBlack Hole by Charles Burns
Buy new: £11.89 / Used from: £9.15
the group's first graphic novel for some time, a few of us rated it highly but I wasn't one of them.
The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gollancz S.F.)The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gollancz S.F.) by Scott Lynch
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
I read this when it came out in paperback and it's the best book I've read so far this year. I don't read much "fantasy" these days but this book really is a fantastic read.
I, RobotI, Robot by Isaac Asimov
Buy new: £2.36 / Used from: £0.01
This was my first Asimov, and I wasn't expecting much from a 60 year old short-story collection. Opener "Robbie" read like a kids bedtime story, but then each successive story got better and better.
Riddley WalkerRiddley Walker by Russell Hoban
Buy new: £2.26 / Used from: £2.00
thisun wer rit Riddleyspeak - inny gud? Haff sed yes brillyant, uver haff sed no so gud
Neverwhere: The Author's Preferred TextNeverwhere: The Author's Preferred Text by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £3.50
I loved Sandman, but Gaiman's novels don't seem to do it for me. This one was OK - some in the group absolutely loved it, but I found it a bit... ratty?
Cat's Cradle (Essential Penguin)Cat's Cradle (Essential Penguin) by Kurt Vonnegut
Buy new: £3.58 / Used from: £3.75
Wasn't enjoying this at first, but then it picked up (with a very funny one-para chapter about a biographical index) so in the end it was a shame it was so short.
GlasshouseGlasshouse by Charles Stross
Buy new: £2.26 / Used from: £2.15
Well-received, although I'd read it recently and didn't fancy reading it again so soon.
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the WorldHard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £3.50
My choice of book again - I was in two minds about picking this as it's not strictly genre. Glad I did though as it provoked some lively and thoughtful discussion.
Vellum: The Book of All HoursVellum: The Book of All Hours by Hal Duncan
Buy new: £1.34 / Used from: £0.01
Bought but never got around to reading this when it came out. Unfortunately I didn't this time either -I gave up after the first chapter. Sorry Hal.
The Anubis GatesThe Anubis Gates by Tim Powers
Buy used from: £2.00
Victorian time-travel, Egyptian magic and body-swapping werewolves - I loved it, just the sort of yarn I was in the mood for. Most of the group weren't so keen though (lack of character development)
Lives of the Monster DogsLives of the Monster Dogs by Kirsten Bakis
Buy used from: £0.90
The first chosen for 2008 and it's an out-of-print book. Despite its many flaws, we all enjoyed this one: a rare achievement!
Mobius DickMobius Dick by Andrew Crumey
Buy new: £2.97 / Used from: £0.01
In another dimension, there may be a me who, like the rest of the group, thought this a clever and entertaining read. In this dimension however, this one just wasn't for me.
The Stolen ChildThe Stolen Child by Keith Donohue
Buy new: £2.87 / Used from: £0.01
As chosen by the book club's new mum... almost all of us enjoyed this - recommended!
Light (Gollancz S.F.)Light (Gollancz S.F.) by M. John Harrison
Buy new: £2.97 / Used from: £0.01
I tried but failed twice to finish this one: I found it far too random, it annoyed the hell out of me. Most of the group rated this one though, I just couldn't see the Light...
The Yiddish Policemen's UnionThe Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon
Buy new: £4.39 / Used from: £2.50
Another "literary" novel but we all liked this one, even if it did get a bit grand towards the end. Recommended!
DiasporaDiaspora by Greg Egan
Buy used from: £2.39
My choice again, unfortunatly only 3 people turned up! It can be hard going getting around the physics descriptions, but persevere and you'll be richly rewarded.
The Prefect (Gollancz S.F.)The Prefect (Gollancz S.F.) by Alastair Reynolds
Buy new: £5.54 / Used from: £1.50
My favourite SF writer, we all seemed to really enjoy this standalone SF detective novel. (July 2008)
