From the Author
I never deliberately planned to write a book about emigration but my intention to write a short guide to help other military people in the same boat as me turned out to be a year long quest. Our adventure started in Sep 2002 with the notion that emigrating was timely and I suppose the process was completed in mid 2005, nearly two years after landing in New Zealand, when we had finally settled into the house and area we wanted.
From the outset, I could not pin down any one publication that would help with everything needing attention both before leaving UK and on first arrival in New Zealand. My book is intended to bridge that gap and will give the reader a hugely beneficial insight of what they are letting themselves in for, physically, mentally and financially.
The whole book is based solely on our experiences as a family and reflects factual information that we gleaned along the way. Learning from experience is a well known phrase but the emigration game is fraught with pitfalls and hurdles that simply have to be overcome if you are to achieve the aim. By reading this book and working through the Event Planner at the end, you will realise just how much needs to be done and put you in the right frame of mind from the earliest possible moment.
About the Author
Steve Horrell served with the Royal Navy for nearly 30 years before emigrating to New Zealand in 2003 with his wife Dawn and two children, Nick and Rebecca. He is now working with the Royal New Zealand Navy on the development of documentation in support of new projects and initiatives. Steve and his family have settled in Upper Hutt - 15 miles to the north of Wellington - where they enjoy a relaxed, outdoor lifestyle and have much more spare time, hence the writing of this book!

A must for anyone considering emigrating to NZ
This is the only book I have come across that sits you down and talks about the emigration process from start to finish. It talks you through the forms to complete, the various visa categories are explained, topics such as doctors, insurance, cars, schools, banks, property, renting, customs, taking pets, driving, weather - its all covered! It even includes a handy 'slang' glossary and checklist for the migrant - have I unlocked my DVD player, cashed in my loyalty cards, when is a good time to contact inland revenue - what about my child benefits? Have I deep cleaned everything that needs to be? What happens with your pension? Have you ordered that Skip??
My new bible! Thank you Steve.
She'll be right!
A must fro any one wanting or thinking about emigrating to NZ
I have read many books from Amazon with regards to emigrating to NZ. This is the only book that writes about the whole process from a real person perspective. Steve Horrell writes from thinking about emigrating right the way through to the end, even taking into account their pets!
A must for any one who wants all information about the emigration process.
Emigrating to NZ
Excellent book if you are thinking about emigrating. Gives you all the answers in one book that you spend hours trying to find out on the telephone/internet etc. Written by someone who has been through the experience and is a very practical book in all respects. Brilliant - answered nearly all my questions.
