Album Description
BRUCE PARRY, STAR OF THE GROUNDBREAKING BBC SERIES 'TRIBE' AND THE FORTHCOMING BBC/DISCOVERY CHANNEL SERIES 'AMAZON', HAS TEAMED UP WITH SOME OF THE MUSIC WORLD'S BRIGHTEST STARS TO CREATE A FUNDRAISING ALBUM FOR SURVIVAL INTERNATIONAL, THE HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION FOR TRIBAL PEOPLES.

Bruce has worked with producer Martin Terefe on the album that includes KT Tunstall, will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas), Johnny Borrell (Razorlight), Mystery Jets, Jason Mraz, Yusuf Islam, Hot Chip, the Go! Team and Mike Oldfield. In addition, Guy Berryman, Jonas Bjerre (MEW), Magne F. (A-ha) and Terefe have formed a new band specially for the CD called Apparatjik, and recorded a track called 'Ferreting' which is featured on the end credits of BBC2 show AMAZON. 'Ferreting' has already been played on the radio including on Jo Whiley's Radio 1 show.

Every track on the album is exclusive, and has been written especially for this album.

AMAZON/TRIBE - Songs for Survival is a double album. CD 1 is entitled 'Amazon' and features songs inspired by the issues affecting tribal people and our planet, as well as Bruce Parry's new series of the same name, shown on BBC2. CD2, entitled 'Tribe', is a collection of dance/experimental songs by the Go! Team, Hot Chip, Blue States, Roger Sanchez and more all of which all are written around field recordings made by Bruce when he lived with indigenous people during the making of his hugely popular BBC show Tribe. The sounds you can hear include drumming from initation ceremonies with the Babongo tribe in Gabon, war chants from the Kombai of Papua New Guinea, hymns from the island tribe of Anuta in the Solomon islands and reed playing from the rainforest of Borneo from the Penan tribe.

Bruce Parry has spent years immersing himself in some of the world's most remote tribal cultures. His first hand experience of the threats so many tribal people face to their very survival lay behind his determination to help them. He said today, 'I've got so much from my time with tribal people that I really wanted to do something for them in return. Being able to bring together this fantastic group of musicians seemed like a perfect way of doing that - and it's been wonderful to see how they've been inspired, in turn, by some of the incredible tribal music we've recorded.'

Legends at work..5
How do you get such a brilliant crowd of legendary artists and hot, young things together on one piece of plastic? Only with the sterling inspiration of Bruce Parry, BBC presenter, expeditionary hero to millions and thoroughly good bloke. There's also the fact that this is a fundraising album for Survival International, who help defend many of the tribes that Bruce has met on his way.

The album's a mixed bag in terms of genres but there are some common themes. The first CD's mostly folk, rocky and sits together nicely, whereas the second CD, a bit more eclectic, but united by these tribal samples that are actually very groovy.

I actually like most of the tracks on some level, but I absolutely love some of them. For a start, there are some legendary vocalists on here. Yusuf Islam, Cat Stevens, haunts me with his existential mourning on Edge of Existence. This really is a song about tribe's dying out. Pretty stark but very beautiful.

Johnny Borrell is awesome. Another completely stirring number in Carrikfergus. It really is huge, epic, folk rock.

Apparatjik with Guy Berryman and company is so 80's, in a great Eurythmics come Coldplay way and I love it, over and over again

And there are so many other artists at the top of their games: Mystery Jets, Dawn Kinnard, Ruby Suns, Hot Chip, Will.i.am, Jason Mraz.

This album's got the big boys and the prolific new scene-makers all over it. There aren't many fillers here.

I recommend it. Some real classics here, from some serioous artists.

Parry delivers4
Big fan of Bruce Parry, so bought this when I saw him promoting it. Mostly excellent - Coldplay guy, KT Tunstall and Johnny Borrell in particular. Only one real dud - don't think will.i.am's heart was in it somehow - but 19 decent tracks out of 20 isn't bad, and it's stuff you won't get anywhere else.

Great compilation album5
Came across this album after seeing an advert in NME. Bought it and have been really impressed by the artists and original tracks for this charity compilation album. Very unusual to find original tracks by such great artists. Great charity Survival International who deserve all the support they can get. Go buy.
