The latest version of this comprehensive set of utilities, Norton SystemWorks 2003 helps you avoid viruses, keeps your PC running smoothly--and fixes it when it doesn't.

Think of Norton SystemWorks 2003 as a Swiss Army knife: you won't need all of the tools in it every day but when you do need them you'll be very glad of them. For a start you get Norton AntiVirus 2003, excellent antivirus software which now scans files downloaded through instant messages as well as from the Web and POP3 e-mail; it also blocks email viruses that try to spread through your e-mail, keeps your virus definitions up to date and looks for virus-like behaviour.

Similarly, many of the tools in Norton Utilities are both easy to use and powerful, checking the Registry and your hard drive for potential problems you wouldn't otherwise see and helping you fix them, although some older tools have been superseded by options in Windows XP itself. However the Speed Disk defragmenter gives you more information and more options than the built-in tools in any version of Windows.

The tools in CleanSweep are useful for clearing out clutter on your PC from applications you've downloaded and installed and for cleaning up after your browser. There are other ways to do all of that and the tools in this version have been re-organised rather than updated, but you do get a very clear and simple interface to work with rather than having to hunt around. Plus there's a new tool called Connection Keep Alive to stop your dial-up connection from disconnecting when you're not actively using it; handy if you're leaving a long download running.

This isn't a major upgrade, but if you don't already have a copy of Norton SystemWorks it's well worth investing in a copy to make sure you're getting the most out of your PC. --Mary Branscombe

To receive your own copy of the software, complete the order registration form contained within the box and return it to Symantec. If you are a student, you must have the form countersigned by a staff member of your educational establishment. If you are a teacher, you must have the form countersigned by the director of your educational establishment. Upon receipt of your order registration form, Symantec will check your student/teacher details and then send you your software on CD-Rom within 14 days of receipt.

Note: Only qualifying students and teachers are eligible for the Student Licence offer. You are a qualifying student if you are enrolled in a school, college or university, on a full-time or part-time basis, which is recognised by the applicable government agency in the country in which you reside. You are a qualifying teacher if you are employed to teach within any such school, college or university as above. Only one product is permitted per student/teacher.

One Of The Must Have Software Applications
When i first bought Norton System Works i was doubtful about how it would perform.
However you must get the stamp of the school you attend or work for inorder to send off for the cd, its worth checking your school or school workplace can do this.
Once installed it works like a treat, the features are brilliant for example the Clean Sweep program to get rid of all that internet junk that collects afters years of internet usage.
Other features in the System Works package include the Antivirus software by syamatec which in my opinion is the best on the market because it is simple to use and very efficienct at eliminating virus files, because you can update it by LiveUpdate software that comes with Norton SystemWorks.
Norton Utilities is yet another application in SystemWorks that will make your pc run like a treat. It clears junk and redunant files from around your pc to allow the pc to be at its best performance.
I would reccomend this product to anyone whose computer is slow because you are 99% guarranteed to notice an imporvment by the first time you use the software.
Usually retailing at £59.99 for the full version i think in the long run you will not regret buying it at the student and teacher price.
