Customer Reviews

Very very basic3
I have a trial version of Expression Web that I want to get to grips with before deciding whether to splash out on a full license and thought this book would be a good introduction.

I only use software if it increases my productivity. For non-dynamic websites I find that hand coding in Edit Plus far more efficient than Dreamweaver or Expression and the code tends to be neater too. However for dynamic sutff, particularly making use of .Net 2 some form of IDE can be advantageous.

Unfortuantely, whilst this book covers off all the basics, how to design a page, how to use graphics, a bit on CSS etc it doesn't touch on the more advanced features such as the .net 2 library and how to use Expression Web to do SQL driven / dynamic sites. To miss these features out all together makes the book a bit of a waste of money as they are one of the selling points of Expression Web.

For this reason I can only give it 3 stars although this is based on my own particular requirements. If you're new to website design and need to know the basics then I'm sure this book is very good. Just be aware that as soon as you're reasonable competent you'll be looking for something a lot more in depth.

USELESS1
A very poor book that misses out coverage of fundamental parts of the software. It looks like they just cut and paste large chunks from their Front Page books, failing to mention or explain significant features (and problems). Index is also lazily put together. This is not worth the money. If you know anything about web design - and/or have used Front Page - save your money.

And there was me thinking it was just a clever marketing ploy!1
Hopeless. Confusing explanations and missing basic information.

No mention of layers, a common way to build web pages. It's not even in the index! How is this possible?

The book tells you it makes certain assumptions, which suggest that it is aimed at people familiar with using a computer and surfing, but new to web site building. But then why is such an important and basic feature of EW missing? It makes no sense.

Now I understand the 'Dummies' label, because that's what I feel like for buying this book!

I wouldn't have given it even a one star rating but Amazon didn't leave me the option.
